talion, I think this is a question that many wonder about. Essentially your Cost per Acquisition should determine how much you should pay. I have to agree with Bluecircle that Google hands you very targeted traffic that converts very well.
Therefore I would like to make a suggestion that you target niche keywords and raise your bids so that you are as high as possible in the rankings. The higher you are the more clicks you will get, which will lead to better conversions. Because this is the case make sure that the keywords you use are spot-on targeted keywords. Also keep in mind what your profit is for each conversion and calculate the success rate or percentage of your click troughs to conversions so you know what the cost threshold is for each click through.
There are other factors that can add value to your campaign, e.g. building a database, but stick to the above for now.
