Traditional list building V Viral list building

Everybody knows that the money's in the list. So what's the best way to build one.

Using a traditional squeeze page technique to build your own personsal list by giving away free reports, mini courses and ebooks.

Or taking the easier and much faster option of joining a viral list builder.

I think it's pretty clear that the former method will build a higher quality more responsive list but for the newcomer viral list building is much easier to startup and much faster.

So which do you think is best?

i personally think links not weight much this day.
i probably will get as many links as i can in less effort, and let SE do the job to rate the links and assign PR. I dont think worth spend tons of hours to get & maintain links, and ends up in PR, but not quality visitors.

i get this though after my PR0 site, successfully outranked few higher PR site. i learn my lesson, and now, i treat PR never exist. it will grow by itself. i belief this is wat google design it to be, nto to be sabotage purposely. this jus my words, hope its meaningful.

Lists are all about quality not quantity. I'd rather have a small list that
wants to be my list, than a huge one that is unsure how they got
subscribed.

I have recently consolidated all my small lists under a new autoresponder,
and had to resubscribe all my members.

I got an email from one subscriber asking where I'd got his details from,
so I replied and told him, but also told him he was welcome to not
confirm his subsciption if he wanted.

Now I know that if he ends up on the list, it's because he really wants
to be there - which is exactly what I want.
