Offering something unique, and reinvesting money in advertising.
Note that all the sites provide something to the user and there is some kind of interaction.
AdultFriendfinder has a banner in almost every crappy website i know :p

The main reason they became popular is because they were pioneers in their chosen fields. They got evolved quickly, formed a circle of trust and achived high rankings by supporting each other.

I know Lars, one of the owners of Adult Friend Finders. He also owns other well known websites. He is a young mild mannored smart guy.

In fact I have been doing some research for a book on how top traffic guys get their traffic. Here's a link to download an interview that I did with one webmaster that was the first to build a traffic empire.

I hated myspace when it first came out, there were too many profile sites as it is. I had facebook when I heard about mys. So i fought them for a long time and gave in. That's the same way I felt about AIM back when I was using Yahoo messenger. But who uses Yahoo Messenger anymore.

The best thing about working on finding the solution to the traffic questions is that once you find it you can use it over and over again in many different businesses.

Most email providers helped spur on their growth by putting signatures
in their emails.

Look at any email from a web based free provider. There's always a
little ad in there. While we might not see them anymore (ad blindness),
in the early days they were a phenomenal aid for raising awareness.
