Need a unique idea for my website
Ok...I'm almost done brainstorming for my new website.I know who my target audience is.what they wanna see in a website, what I'm going to put up in my website, etc etc.I also know what the competition is doing and who will my biggest competitors be..but I can't decide how I could do something unique..something that none of my competitors is doing yet. This is my plan so far:
I make a website about computer viruses. The name of the website would be like "virus-explorers.com".I'll use a cartoon character as the identification of the website..just like askjeeves.com uses a butler and webmonkey.com has a monkey..I'll use an explorer kinda guy..you know, one like those geologists who wear a brown hat with brown dress and carry magnifying glasses haven't drawn him yet..anyway,I'll get myself a spare computer, but it would be a cheap one..the cheapest one that I could find.On that computer,I would download viruses, observe them and understand how they work, make removal tools for the viruses on my good computer and run them on the infected one.If the tool removes the virus from the infected on, then that would mean that the tool works. Then on my website I would make pages about individual viruses whom I have worked on,each page would contain information about the virus, its method of infection, how it infects the computer, etc etc.And then the removal tool for that virus along with the removal instructions.I'll do so with as many viruses as possible.I'll also create an email accont with the name "virus@virus-explorers.com" or something like that,on which people would forward emails in which they receive viruses. For example,if you receive a virus in email, you could forward the email to the above mentioned email address, and I'll download the virus to the spare computer,if I haven't already done so with that virus..and then do all the removal tool thing with that virus. In that way I would also find new viruses.Well this is my whole plan..but,I can't decide how I can be unique doing that.So far,my biggest competitors would be:
F-Secure( http://www.fsecure.com)
Symantec( http://www.symantec.com)
Mcafee( http://www.mcafee.com)
As you can see,all of these companies are anti-virus giants who already get tons of traffic and have brilliant anti-virus programs already.However..I wouldn't be competing with them for the anti-virus programs cuz I don't have my own one yet.I'll be competing with them only on the virus information pages. You know, each of these websites has pages on individual viruses. These pages are very similar to the ones I plan to make on my website.Now..the only way I can beat these giants(or at least get near them),is by having something unique on those virus information pages...something that none of these websites already has.Something that will make my target audience come running to my website..something that NO ONE is doing yet.Can you help me out with what that thing could be?So far,I think it will be writing the virus information pages in a conversational and humurous manner(sorry if it sounds stupid..but it does work for many websites,a big example is htmlgoodies.com,and I once wrote an article in that manner and everyone seemed to love that).

I honestly think this will be an almost impossible market to break into. Since you would not really have the backing of any major anti-virus players there would be lots of doubt about the validity of any tools you develop and release.

Its a good idea, except the email bit. You will have to contact your host, and get some sort of secure email, because they wouldnt want viruses going thourgh the email system

ali, are you a program, or do you know how to explore a program to view its source code and thus, to see how it works ? ---> to make its removal tool ? - my idea: link from your site to the f-secure site's removal tool ... ! - or just host them on your server and keep its read-me's ect...

There are many viruses that dont have removal tools, which only tools such as full anti-virus programs can beat. Of course the major ones such as win95.CIH have removal tools, but what about ones such as metallica.anarchy95? They are common enough, going around in circulation, yet theres no removal tools available. A website with removal tools for thousand of virii would be the ultimate aim, though you would really need to learn alot of code to see how these things work,.

I say give it a try, I did the exact same thing as you are doing now. I was told that its nearly impossible to break into the market ... im glad i tried ... wish u best of luck bro.
IF you haven't purchased the domain ... then its worth keeping it quite.
Can you create viruses or ? If you can you could offer some unique services on your site such as anti-virus, virus removal and so on ...
(Btw my site is PC-Clever.com if you didn't gather)

LOL...how could I possibly be a "program"..I'm a human being lol..anyway..I think I will give it a try..I'm not a very good programmer, but there are lots of programs available that notify you whenever a program adds a registry key to your computer and notify you about almost everything else..so I guess I will try it..one last question, what would my product be?I mean..what shall I sell on my website?I can't have an Anti Virus software,so shall I sell an ebook or a video about comp.viruses?

I think what you want to do is optimize each page for one specific virus. That way you can get a ton of #1 rankings for terms that are searched for, but not nearly as much as terms like "antivirus".
Take my phones site for example: http://wireless-phone-reviews.com. I optimized every page on that site for a specific model of phone.
On google, search for....
-audiovox. My site doesn't rank.
-audiovox phones. My site doesn't rank.
-audiovox cdm8600. 13th
-audiovox cdm8600 reviews. 1st.
I could have tried to optimize for "nokia phones" and "audiovox phones" and etc, but those would have been hard to get.
Now not too many people search for audiovox cdm8600 or audiovox cdm8600 reviews, but I have 80 phones on my site, so it all adds up.

I agree with al2six I would plan on getting ranked good for each specific virus.
