Unrelated Backlinks.....

Does it hurt to have your link on a HIGH PR site that is unrelated to your site?

I am a member of many networking sites like myspace.com,facebook.com,ryze, orkut, etc

just wondering if having my link on these sites will hurt or benefit me?

Absolutely no problem in having your link out there.
Having your links at the above or any other good social bookmarking sites will only help your site in attracting traffic.

It would help in seo rankings also as backlinks help a site for the same. The first advantage would be getting that important backlink and the second would be the traffic from those sites.

There is absolutely no problem if you have you links on the other sites which are not related to your's. Only the PR of that site should be better than the PR of your site.

google says that you will not get any penalty of having links on unrelated website.
getting links on unrelated website will not usefull in terms of seo except untargeted traffic.

Getting backlinks also from unrelated websites will benefit a webmaster in terms of seo as a link at the end of the day is a link for a site which is going to promote the site in terms of search rankings but yes links from related websites are always the most favorable as they also pull in a good amount of useful traffic having high conversions.

those social networking sites mentioned will definitely help you boost your traffic but i am not sure whether SEs count this as one of your backlinks though some social bookmarking sites are already counted as one...

The only thing I noticed about trying to link on sites like Myspace, is that while the site itself has a PR of an 8. A persons' own MySpace is usually a 0.

Not that PR is everything

Couldn't someone then make a million of myspace accounts with the thought of getting their link a millions times?

I dont see the benefit in this, it doesnt seem to help, to have your link in any old random place. Social Bookmarking is nice but I dont see the benefits.

Anyone here have any thought. Whn it comes to linking, the best examples that have been worth it are:

Squidoo: indexed and ranked in google

Getting a link on a high traffic page because the owner likes your site and is willing to put you in a nice place. For example, we have a site that is for the DV Green Card Lottery. I saw a site that my traffic my be interested in and asked the webmaster if they would put our banner up. The webmaster agreed and placed a banner on a great page, and not only did I get my link on a high ranked site, but also it actually gets traffic!

Not worth it:

Directory submissions
Random Linking

Anyone else?

I agree with this.

As long as the site hasn't been penalized or something, it can't hurt.

When it comes to links I always see them as a new possibility to get spidered more frequently. The more ways into your site them better the chances of spiders dropping by.

I would back you on this point UBF. Also if you are targeting on a specific keyword which you want to come up in the search rankings then submitting in the directories with that specific set of keywords will definitely help you and the advantage of getting a link is always there so I would give a thumbs-up for it.

But what does everything about unrelated links. We must get at least 25 requests for a link exchange a week. And they are almost always unrelated.

Is it worth it, we started doing the exchanges but now, we have stopped. I didnt see any good come from it?

Thoughts?

i think if you get it from a related site would be better, otherwise its just good. backlink wherever its from is good.

I find it quite difficult to get related links, if like me you are selling, the sites that sell the same type of products don't want to advertise similar sites because of the competition.
