Ahem... all TE publicity is not bad! You just need to know how to set up an appropriate advertising campaign. If anyone is interested in using this as a free advertising resource contact me, and I will help you get a good campaign organised

Didn't think of that one. If you use the "OnlyWire" tool to handle the Social Bookmarking you can get link from many social sites quickly.
Swapw, where do you barter for those "services"?

I did try craigslist and got a few adds. How do you know whether a link is going to benefit your site? Obviously any link is better than none and relevance is also good. I mean does a link to craigslist help? Do they block the outbound link with any sort of nofollow code?

Blogs are the best I have found so far. Traffic and link exchanges just don't get looked at too much. The people doing these are trying to sell their products.
Good luck

There are a various ways to advertise and market your website as mentioned in the previous posts but you need to know that which works the best for your site and then capitalize on that method.
Personally for me forums, blogs and social bookmarking/networking sites are very good and effective ways to market and let surfers know about the site.

Hi,
A lot of the ideas mentioned sound great. Articles, blogs, link exchanges. I know someone else mentioned craigslist. That one works very well for me, you just have to be consistent and post there everyday, different sections and cities, etc...
Another site I use that drives a ton of traffic to my site is TrafficSwarm. You basically click on other people's ads to see their site and you build up credits. I currently surf for a half hour per day on the site. With that I get about 250-300 credits per day. That means that an ad for my site will be shown to others who are surfing and I will receive a high number of hits to my site. They may like my site and stick around or they may just be surfing for credits....that's the trade off you make, but if enough people see your site, some will find it interesting and stick around, etc... You can also choose the categories that your ad shows up in, so you can choose ones that line up with your site and convictions, etc...
It's definitely more for a sales driven site or an online business, but it also definitely gets the traffic moving on your site....and you never know who will see your site and love it, etc...
I hope this helps a little! If you need help setting up traffic swarm, check out the website under my signature. It's the business that I'm building and you can sign up for free and look at their free online marketing guide. They have free online video tutorials for setting up trafficswarm, blogs, forum posts, etc...It has been very helpful for me!
To your great success!

If you're going to do no investment of money, then you will have to invest time because in present scenario time=money. So spend your time doing manual submission to 100s of web directories, getting backlinks from social bookmarking sites, exchanging links with websites in the same niche and so on.
So by the net PR update (probably in the first week of September), you mighthave a decent pagerank. The rest as they say, would be history.

Netscape can work ... signup then submit a link to an article on your site, you'll need to have good content and good timing to get traffic, but you'll at least get a link. You may also pick up stumbles (as has happened to me from netscape articles) which generates big (worthless from a CTR perspective) traffic.

Try links from signatures, or article submission. It may help market your site faster.

Free is the way
hi everyone my names alfred. The thing that ive learnt over the while advertising is that money isnt always the anwer. Like everyones mentioned there are plenty of ways to generate traffic with no money. Submitting articles is ver good as well as writing and submitting testimonials which is also another way to bring traffic to your site. Try to mix up your marketing methods and im sure your get the results you require.

There are actually quite a bit of places for it such as the rival of V7n in DP. Most people are willing to pay top dollar just to have someone "stumble" on their website or stories. To be honest, most people would prefer not paying for any service and bartering is the best solution to it.
About what I mentioned on TE is pure rubbish traffic, tried it, been there, done that. Pure junk, if you actually surf TE after about the 100th ads you go numb. It's all pointless after. Let's not forget about the Adsense ban and others who are against TE in their TOS.
bochgoch,
I have never heard about marketing through Netscape before. Is the readership big in volume? If it's big in volume, is it good traffic generated from your article submissions? I might want to try that, I just thought it was a web site has already passed its time but I guess there are still people running there.

Free or nearly free advertising and promotion has worked for me.
Certainly blogging combined with social bookmarking is very good right now. Article marketing and forum marketing work for me as well. I currently get almost 50,000 unique visitors a month now and spend less than $100 a month on advertising and that is for a couple of text link ads, so it can be done.

1.) Press Releases - Even the free ones work great (Special hint from an old copywriter: if you optimize your press release, you can rank better than #1 on Google)
2.) Squidoo!! - Google LOVES Squidoo lenses! Set one up with an article and a link (or a few) back to your site.
3.) Blogs - Find blogs related to your site, post a relevant comment (this is important) and add a link to your site in your sig.
4.) Forums - Most people tend to overlook the power of forums. Find a forum related to your site, and be sure to put your link in your sig file. Start posting!!
Hope this helps you, best of luck!
