Amazon has a good reputation. Don't know of many others that do.

How much you will make will depend on the program. Amazon since it was mentioned gives me anywhere from 2% to 15% of the sales price of the product purchased thru my affiliate link. THe percentage difference has to do with how the visitor purchased the item from my link. If they purchase from a direct linked item you get more % than if they purchase an item they searched on after they used your link.

Use google adsense.
https://www.google.com/adsense/
ya..amazon is a good one as John said.
umm...online pharmacies is a good one as well. Go to www.linkshare.com or www.cj.com . That's like a whole affiliate network. you will find lots of affiliate programs there. YOu will need to register first though.
Thanks,
John

Hi,
affilaite programs are only going to work if the affiliate program is in the same industry as your website. So, this should already limit the possiblities for you.
For me personally, affiliate programs work great. I actually build and promote websites that are all about an affiliate product. Therefore, my sites are supposed to sell other peoples products, and to be honest, they don't have much other useful information on the, except about the companies and their products.
Works good for me!

Actually, I am contemplating a class action lawsuit against one of the largest affiliate networks, linkshare.
Be carefull, do your research on the affiliate before you sign up. I have had over 3000 click thorughs and no sales. This is just one of the many problems I have and still have to this day.
Linkshare owes me a little over 500 and they still haven't paid me for 6 months.
If you want more info on this case email me at: linkshare_courtcase@yahoo.com

This is my own little personal success story.
I needed more revenue for my web site and being on a very limited very strapped marketing budget increasing my spending was not an option.
I did some affliate program research and was actually reffered by a user on this board to a PPC / meta site called GenieKnows.com
before I continue any further I must note that I do have good volumes of traffic on my site, but the conversion rate to purchase isn't as it should be.
I figured I can't force people to buy but I may be able to convert those numbers into revenue another way.
Now getting back to GenieKnows.com I found that aside from PPC they offered a "co-branding affiliate program" where as I was set up with an xml search feed (search box) directly on my main page the relavancy of the results are good and it's valued added feature to my site for my users but what's better is.
Now for every search that occurs on that box I receive a 50/50 rev share split and am pleased to say that with my high traffic numbers I am making substantial revenue off the box not only did I get that but I also received a free $25 trial PPC account which did not dissapoint
My revenue is up and thats my story

1) Need lot's of raffic.
2) In order to convert you must target your market.
3) You need to be with a "good" affiliate program which will report sales.
4) You need to trust the merchant which you are advertising so that he will report sales.
5) This requires lot's of trust, which in 78% of the time for me ended up in having it be broken by incidents which could have been prevented but were not which in turn resulted in lost revenue.

Amazon is one of the stinchiest programs out there. No cookies or lifespan rate - which means that if I click on your link, don't buy but come back in a week and buy, you get nothing.
burgi82 hit the nail on the head - you have to promote products that are relevant to your site and useful for your audience otherwise the conversion rate will be poor.
You can join one of the networks or a private program, check out - http://esponsors.ws/ - a good place to start.
If you post your url maybe a few people could give you a few ideas of which programs you could try out?

From my experience, most pay poorly. AdSense works for us and only one or two others.

Sounds like everyone agree's that Amazon does ok but we had over 20,00 click throughs when we had amazon on our site and it didn't translate into a single sale. We are a search engine.

To do well with affiliate stuff, you need to put time and effort into it. burgi82 is an example, and I have friends who make their living doing it. I found an affiliate scheme that makes me plenty of money without putting any work into it but that's unusual.
You can have a website that gets plently of traffic, and you can put some affiliate links on it. You'll get some click-throughs and some sales, but unless the affiliate programs are in the same field as your website, you'll only get dribs and drabs.
Most people who make good money with affiliate stuff put a lot of time and lot effort into it. Many of them build whole networks of websites. It can be very rewarding but it does take time and effort - unless you just happen to get lucky.

IMO google adsense have two advantages.
1) they target the ads according to your site, so your visitors are very likely to click on the ads.
2) they pay really well. Some of the keywords on my site are paying around 1 dollar per click, others are paying around 0.05. In the end it makes a good mix.

Your question is a very broad one. You need to find affiliate programs that are targetted to your site. As far as how much you can make depends on lots of different factors.
I personally make enough money just from affiliate programs to live on (but at this time have kept my day job).

There are many good affiliate programs out there. But I find the best ones that work for me are ppc affiliate programs/ppc search engines. This is because you earn per clickthru, which means that you don't have to sell anything. But then other people may not like them as every body has different oppinions.
Adsense is very good to use as they use highly targeted ads that match the content of your site. It also converts well, depending on the type of industry your in.
If you are getting into the affiliate programs market, it will be best to find out about an affiliate program before joining up, as there are a few bad ones out their.
It will also be good to sign up to a few affiliate programs so you don't have to rely on just one program, just incase it does not pay, convert, etc.
Also, if you sign up to a few affiliate programs, don't do what a lot of other people do, by listing them on one page to make it look like an ugly banner/link farm.
To succeed in affiliate marketing, it can take some time, especially if you are new to the concept. Another words, you can't expect to sign up to affiliate programs one day and be minted the next.

Do your research on affiliate programs. Some are very stingy and some pay well. I am involoved with the Top 5 affilaite programs combined into 1 site and I love it but make sure your commissions are worth the time and effort you will put into promoting.
Good luck!

AdSense is probably the easiest one to work with since you don't
have to pick ads yourself. Consider using affiliate networks. Find
the programs that work and converts to healthy eCPCs. Make
sure you use attractive textlinks at good spots. It takes a little
more work but might work out better in the end.

The end-all forums about affiliate marketing are:
www.ABestWeb.com
They are by far the biggest, most comprehensive resource for affiliate programs online. A lot of the affiliate network managers even hang out there.
