I've watched interviews with the founder of Craigslist, and he was adamant that they would not adopt a paid model, precisely because it would ruin it.

It's good for selling stuff locally. Not a very good resource for website promotion however.

I have a real estate web site and have tried it. For some reason my links back to my site don't work. Is there some way around that? Is this craigslist blocking the link? I am barely above chimp level when it comes to html stuff.

The links to my sites have always worked fine. Prehaps they've changed something recently though.

I have had mixed results. It depends on what you are trying to sell. The lower costs the more response.

The success depends on what your selling. If the don't police craigslist, it will go downhell, as its being spam a lot. And users don't like spam. Which will drive them away.

They are ranked 47 on alexa - they don't have too much to worry over. MySpace.com has more to worry about with spam issues. It is pretty easy to avoid spam on Craigslist and it also get's reported which removes the post. I've heard people getting banned from Clist - or atleast their domain.

I use it successfully. There are alot of categories, and you have to know what categories your target audeince is searching and be able to make your ad fit into the category, If it is blatant spam you get removed everytime - or atleast no good leads.

craigslist is a good place in my opinion. you have to post periodically and be smart on writing. you cant just put a link there saying visit my great site. you include the url along with a good short writing. it will introduce your site to some good number of people.
you can also place a free ad on my site http://www.webcosmo.com
its a cambridge, ma based site offering free classifieds in 14 countries and growing fast.
good luck.

If you are going to use Craigslist for advertising, then most times, you should be posting in the Small Biz Ads section under Services.

That being said, Craigslist can be great for building a list by offering free information first, instead of out and out marketing...

Craigs List Advertising

Craigs List does charge for advertising in their most popular local markets in the most popular topic areas like jobs.

Used to be you could post a free job advertising in Seattle, no more. Or, in say Boston metro, but now they charge. But go to a city in South America or to Fresno, and you can still post for free.

The newspapers have had thier lunch taken away from them by CraigsList. They've lost Billions and Billions.

When an area gets too popular, they begin to charge a modest fee.

$25 to $50 for advertising a job. Compare that to Monster, HotJobs or some other career site, and it is a bargin.

I would imagine that CraigsList is an expert at fighting spam, while keeping a very open and inviting format, but I'd think that they must spend 20% or so on fighting spam.

For a free venue, they can't keep that up and I'd imagine that they will do something about it soon.

I've used Craigs List to advertise local jobs for IT Jobs. It's been okay, but I do get spammed.

Keeping it totally local given them some ability to combat spam, because spammers can only really survive advertising non-local & virtual services like web-hosting, affiliate programs, porn, and the like.

I did ads on craiglist for used cars. It is getting good visits. In fact, it crossed Google as the highest referrer last month.
