Time on site

What is a reasonable time that someone should be staying on your site (average). Currently, visitors are staying on my site an average of 4:04. I know it will vary by type and size of web site, but I was just wondering what some of your averages are.

It will vary way too much to get any sort of answer. What if your site had a 2 hour long video embedded? What if it had a promotion code? What do you think the differences would be?

Of course there are many variables, that goes without saying. That's why I asked for an average. Most web masters closely track there site and should be able easily quote their daily average time on site for their visitors.

it depends on what the purpose of your site is and what sort of content you provide as to how long people will stay. there are too many variables to provide an overall average that is accurate and applicable to everyone

Again, I already know there are variables and the answer will be different for each type of web site. That doesn't have to be repeated over and over, it's an average folks, it's not rocket science. If you are unable to provide your information because you are failing to track your visitors on site time then fine just don't reply, but I would think any competent web master is tracking this statistic. I am just curious of what some other on site times are. It is an important statistic, people always talk about how many unique hits a day they have, but how long are they staying?

Most of them I guess staying as longer 30 seconds to 1 minute, but you can retain them for further visit so think how you can retain them for repeat visit.

Yes repeat visits are very nice, but I am trying to stay on the topic of "Time on site" so stay focused folks. OK so your average time is between 1 minute and 30 seconds. Try to get an average bobcrist, and you shouldn't have to guess.

My average is 1 min 15 secs. I Want to get that up obviously.

Hmm, mine arnd 1:32 - 45sec, on one of my site. On the other which is an entertainment site on avg it's 8 mins since most of the contents are videos

Mine has dropped down to 3.43, but I think it is due to this being an extremly dead time for football. When football season starts up again it should go back up. I will record my monthly average and compare it to next year at this time to chart progress.

For June, and my other website (mywizardads.com), my visitors (and clients) stick around in the range of 5 minutes to over 1 hour. The percentage is, surprisingly, almost equal all the way across the board. I get a lot of repeat business so many know what they want, come get it, get it done and wait for my thank you emails. The rest, thankfully, appear to be reading so they understand what the service is all about - always a good sign!

You've given me an idea for a new post though - so I'll head outside to ask...

Mine is about 1:30 - 2:00 because I have short posts and not much that requires a lot of reading.

I'd like to get that number up as most people do but considering that a large percentage of people find me through search, that's not going to happen anytime soon.

The folks that bookmark my site and visit more often because they actually like the general topic, stay much longer and read more posts/articles... so I guess the AVG time on site is really only relevant if you consider how your visitors found you in the first place.
