Link Exchange Requests - Need Some Good Advice

Hi,

In the past month I've been asking relevant sites to link to my site. Before sending a mail with a link exchange request I've done the following:

* Checked these sites are really relevant to mine.
* Added their link to my site.

After sending about 50 mails to 50 sites, I got no replies..
I guess these sites get by mail every day a lot of these requests.

Is this the right way of doing it ? Am I missing something here ?
How can I make this process more efficient ?

Good advices will be most appreciated.

50 is very little number to make any conclusions. 500 is more reasonable.

Can you please make it more detail. Did you place their links on pages with their requirements (PR, number of links, etc.) All of that sites have link pages, right ? Also do you use e-mail based on your domain name ? And give please example of your letter

All of that after putting their link at my site.
Is the problem 50 and not 500 - meaning the amount is too low ?

There's so much of that now I don't thinks it's affective. I recommend offering them free content. Offer them an original article by you with your link in it. I think that works better.
