LuLu.com - Get Your Book Printed and on Amazon!

Sometimes you just don’t want to sell your book in digital form. Or you might want to consider selling your digital book in a physical form- if it was easy.

There are a few options for having your book printed - cheap - that didn’t exist a few years or even months ago.

I found this one in an article about a local writer who just finished his book.

He said it was being sold by lulu.com.

It appears LuLu.com will sell the book for you and you get to set the royalty-and you can have them print the book in small quantities.

There are no set-up fees and no minimum orders.

Lulu prints and ships each book as it’s bought.

The buyer pays the cost — not you.

Lulu only makes money if you do.

You retain all rights to your work. You decide on design and layout. You set the price and royalties.

Lulu lets you sell your work through Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble — and on Lulu itself.

Lulu handles all transactions, order tracking and shipping.

Sounds like a winning service to me and their prices are a little better than cafepress.com.

Take a look if this is of interest,

I used CafePress.com to print my book and that worked very fine actually. I had to apply for ISBN myself, but that's not so hard

Since I'm in Sweden I simply just filled in an application at the National Library of Sweden: http://www.kb.se/ISBN/ENG/default.htm

You can order 1 ISBN at the time or blocks if you're going to publish a lot of books. When you apply for an ISBN you can select if you want it sent to you by email or snail mail (both options are free so I used snail mail because then they also send some information brochures).

If you're in the US, ISBN numbers can be obtained through (http://www.isbn.org/standards/home/index.asp). It's really a quick process. For me it was less than 7 days. They e-mail you the numbers.

BTW, if you want an alternative, there's a book called Aiming at Amazon which is really helpful.

The author's site (http://www.aaronshep.com/publishing/index.html) gives you a good indication of the method that he uses. In a nutshell, he goes through Lightning Source - which is a subsidiary of Ingram, the biggest book wholesaler in the US. Lightning Source is a print-on-demand publisher that Amazon orders through.

Good luck!

Thanks bylla, Thanks writegurl,

I appreciate your quick responses about how to get an ISBN in Sweden and the US.

I live in Canada, can someone help me out with the link to getting an ISBN if you live in Canada?

Moderators: I saw that you removed the link to LuLu from my original post. Just so you know, I have no affiliation with the link, just passing on this idea and resource.

For Canada you would go to http://www.lac-bac.gc.ca/isbn/index-e.html.

Their contact information:
Canadian ISBN Agency
Library and Archives Canada / Bibliothèque et Archives Canada
Attn.: Mr Jean-Eudes Bériault
Director, Acquisitions Directorate
395 Wellington Street
Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0N4

Tel: (+1 819) 994 68 72 or (+1 866) 578 77 77 toll free) (select 1+5+1+3)
Fax: (+1 819) 997 75 17
E-mail: isbn@lac-bac.gc.ca

If anyone from any other country also would like to apply for a ISNB you can find your national agency at http://www.isbn-international.org/en/agencies.html (Just click on the letters to find national agencies).

It would be great if more people passed this information around. It's very valuable. I posted this thread and I even learned a thing or two more thanks to the contributions of others.

Maybe it's time to write an ebook: "How to publish your own printed books"?
