Help Employer Affraid to Advertise!!

My employer has giving me the task of generating at least 1 million hits a month but is insisting on only getting that through organic search. Has no intention on any type of advertising or PPC or anything like that for our site; even though we do it for our clients sites so I know my boss is aware of the traffic it can bring.

Unfortunately for me, we are in a competitive field (plastic surgery) and our top competitor has around 300,000 IBL's compared to our 10,000 IBL's and yes they all do it through valid links and advertising links.

We have valid unique content that we are creating more and more of each day and we submit to directories so what other "Non-Advertising" (see cheap ways) are there to get traffic?

We are already doing social sites like digg, stumbleupon, netscape, myspace, reddit and are looking into article submissions.

What else can I do???

He`s smart. 1 million hits, if you got that all though adwords (in such an expensive uh "niche" too) you`d be out of business within hours.

In fact, I can only think maybe lawyers or jewelry could actually be more expensive to advertise in. The reason for the expensive-ness is the large profit margin and high-priced services these things provide, hence the high costs of advertising.

You should go natural, it`ll be hard and difficult, but if you do it the right way, it`ll pay off. Since your service is probably local, i`d suggest going after keywords that involve cities and locations near you. (Re: Orange County Big Toe Augmentation Surgery). And try to go after typos as well, i know i misspell Surgery way too often...

A million hits (and by hits, im assuming he means uniques) a month is pretty crazy, you arent gonna get that. Heck, you may not get that even if you were listed #1 for "Plastic Surgery"

well not speaking specifically about AdWord's, but just paying to put a banner ad on a relevant site or a small print add in a local magazine or something.

I was able to get 1 million unique hits the other month but that was just by a small margin.

Other then the sites i listed above for are their any other social sites or avenues i should be looking at for traffic?

If your budget permits it you may run a lot of contextual ads: google, yahoo.

you may also try some press releases, e.g. offering a 5% discount of plastic surgery etc.

analyze the competitor's site and see where is he/she listing and make some featured listings or interviews....

When I think plastic surgery I think viral traffic. Do you remember the viral campaign that Dove put out no too long ago? Great campaign. Maybe you could do a complete surgery makeover from start to finish "swan" style, with short clips showing the complete process and what it took to get the final result. End result, viral video.

You need one hell of a creative marketing firm with one killer idea. Good luck.
