Million Dollar Homepage, Revisited

At its peak, the Million Dollar Homepage had some pretty impressive Alexa rankings. After having forgot about the site for months, I remembered my desire to check up on it.

From an Alexa rank of 127, it has dropped to near 50,000. Essentially, the site gets an un-impressive amount of traffic.

Wonder what the guy who spent $38,100 on pixels think of his purchase now?

LOL yea hard to believe isnt it. I know I would never have done it. I could never see the real value in these sites anyways except if I was the owner of one that was selling a ton of ads.

Most of the people who purchased that much space resold it to others, so in all likelihood they made money, that or they used it as a springboard to start clone pixel sites.

Well John I think you've described it perfectly. At it's peak it was great. It was getting a ton of press and (it still does get a little. . .because people will always bring it up)

But it's not a site that people are going to keep visiting. There isn't any real hook there (except for the story of the site) . . .and so no press = no real traffic = a waste of money.

I would advise against investing in these pixel type sites because no one visits them .. .it's a waste of money.

Skinny

I agree 100% with you. They were nothing more than a gimmick and for a short period the only real traffic was coming from the uniqueness of the idea and possible advertisers. Now the hype is pretty much gone, but some have made their money in this and you have to commend them for their originality.

It's not so bad...

We actually have an ad on the million dollar homepage, and oddly, for as little as it is I still get click thrus to my sight. It takes nothing to upkeep. For the results I got and the money I spent I think it was well worth it. Although it is not working like it was intended to and used to...it still works and people still go there. Thank goodness we didnt pay $38,000 though!!!
