Promoting a new forum
I want to create a new forum and promote it quickly so it becomes the #1 destination in the Internet for its niche product.

What marketing tricks such as contests or prizes should I use in order to achieve that goal in the most cost-effective way? Has anyone had such success in the past? How quickly you achieved results?

Better to start with few members whom you know personally - then promote it - contest, banner ads - methods like pay per posting - are helpful to generate huge traffic.

You could try posting on similar niched forum and promote it via your sig! But give them a good reason why they would want to register and become active in your forum. A nice contest with a cool prize might do just that

Incentives are the best way to get a forum going. Money, competitions etc. You know we will give you a free domain name (or something in your niche) for every 100 posts you make etc.

They you need to announce your incentive on other related web sites.

You mention becoming the #1 destination, I assume you are also doing the standard SEO things like link building?
