How To Benefit From The 80/20 Principle
By Michael Hall

My friend do you find yourself procrastinating, just
wasting time for no good reason? Are you constantly busy
and hard at work? Feeling you have travelled 6 miles, only
to realize that you only made it 6 feet ahead?
The 80/20 principle basically states that 80% of whatever
was accomplished is a result of only 20% of the effort
used to attain the accomplishment.
In other words the fundamental problem you are experiencing
may very well be a direct result of your lack of focus on
the 20% that matters.
The problem is that you are most likely spending most of
your time completing the minor stuff - the 80%. But you are
not focusing FIRST on the important 20%. If you focus on
completing the least important stuff first - the 80%, you
will find that you often never get around to even starting
to work on the important 20%.
The Solution?
Try this now ...
Sit down and look at your list of things to do today,
(HINT:You do have a list right?), and suppose you have 10
tasks to complete today. This rule is saying that only 2 of
the 10 scheduled tasks are really important and the other
8 can be done later or maybe not at all.
Just ask yourself ...
1. What will be gained if I do no.3 today?
2. What will be the consequence of not completing no.3
today?
Do that for all 10 tasks, and assign each a priority, 1-10
or a-z.
Now get started on the 2 most important tasks right now!
If you do this each day, you will find that you got a lot
done by doing just 2 items; The 2 most important items.
It's sort of like spending all day getting your nails or
hair done, it takes all day(80%) but you never got around
to picking out a great outfit(20%). No matter how nice your
hair and nails look you aren't going out without a nice
outfit.
Or cleaning up the kitchen(80%) and not washing the dishes
and cleaning the floor(20%). The kitchen still appears to
be filthy because you spent your time doing the easier,
quicker tasks, and neglected the 2 tasks that make a big
difference.
By the time you finish reading Brian Tracy's, "Eat That
Frog: 21 Ways to Overcome Procrastination" you will be a
lot more efficient and organised, the short article above
is just a sample of one of the techniques he covers. I own
it and Highly reccomend it, and It has a beautiful picture
on the cover as well. It is a definite must have in any
success library. You'll love it, have a quick look ...
