How To Get Visitors
Hi. I am new here at this forum. I searched for a long time before I found you guys. I am also sorta new to the internet too and I was wondering what is the best to get visitors when you build a site or something on the net?I mean to get millions of hits? I also sorta understand what spam is and I don't wanna do that either! I don't COMPLETELY understand what spam is however. But I am getting there. Well, I hope someone can answer my question!

What is spam:
Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. Spam costs the sender very little to send -- most of the costs are paid for by the recipient or the carriers rather than by the sender.
There are two main types of spam, and they have different effects on Internet users. Cancellable Usenet spam is a single message sent to 20 or more Usenet newsgroups. (Through long experience, Usenet users have found that any message posted to so many newsgroups is often not relevant to most or all of them.) Usenet spam is aimed at "lurkers", people who read newsgroups but rarely or never post and give their address away. Usenet spam robs users of the utility of the newsgroups by overwhelming them with a barrage of advertising or other irrelevant posts. Furthermore, Usenet spam subverts the ability of system administrators and owners to manage the topics they accept on their systems.
Email spam targets individual users with direct mail messages. Email spam lists are often created by scanning Usenet postings, stealing Internet mailing lists, or searching the Web for addresses. Email spams typically cost users money out-of-pocket to receive. Many people - anyone with measured phone service - read or receive their mail while the meter is running, so to speak. Spam costs them additional money. On top of that, it costs money for ISPs and online services to transmit spam, and these costs are transmitted directly to subscribers.
One particularly nasty variant of email spam is sending spam to mailing lists (public or private email discussion forums.) Because many mailing lists limit activity to their subscribers, spammers will use automated tools to subscribe to as many mailing lists as possible, so that they can grab the lists of addresses, or use the mailing list as a direct target for their attacks.
The best way to get traffic is to do some S.E.O.
Search Engine Optimasation. (read up on this board and the SEO board and you'll get some really good ideas.

I think one of the key identifiers of SPAM is that it is unsolicited. There are many more methods of spamming than Usenet and Email. That new method of pushing a network message with an advertisement to an IP address for instance.
I hate to have to disagree with you Eyelfixit, but SEO is not the best method to get traffic, although it is indeed a powerful tool. In order to generate traffic, you must inform people who would be interested in your website about it's existance and what it offers. This is usually known as marketting.
PharmacyGirl, why don't you tell us a little bit about your website, and post a URL so we can look at it? Also, have you identified your target market (the type of people you want to visit you) and what you are offering that would attract them?

SEO is the most ethical way of getting numbers like that. Though I do agree with what your saying that marketing is good, it is, but marketing as a whole is very costly.
I do also agree with identifying the market your targeting, the next step would be to find a way to target that market. My suggestion at this point would be SEO.

Not SEO itsef, SEO is about geting found (as I understand it), but you also need content. Content is the thing that you offer them, information, business propasitions, entertainment, what ever.
I think of SEO as working with SE's in mind, allowing them to function properly is one half, and the other is correctly giving your site a catagory of it's own. So it helps if you offer something unique.
SE's are just one channel for new customers entering your site.
Another is adverts, and word-of-mouth (a bit like adverts).
Advets and promotion is where marketing comes in.
To get customers to refer mroe people to your site, you have to make sure they were impressed by it, by making sure they can do what they came to do at your site with minimum fuss and maximum fun. Give them an easy, productive and memorable experience and they will tell al their friends.
