I'm not a big fan of posts and blogs that are this or that issue's me-too-chiming. I work with folks like you every day and with problems like this every day. The problems don't go away if everyone ignores the elephant in the room. So now you know what's coming...,
Seems to me the very clear problem here is scan and skim issues with ziplabor.com. You sound like you are doing an admirable job of driving offline marketing to your domain, but when the sophisticated audience of college students and professionals get there, all of that is undone by the Web .75 look of the site. It's hard to compete with
www.aquent.com and others in your industry, but you have set-up a quandry for your guests when they arrive - are you a site left over from 1998 trying to make a last-gasp effort to pull in a community? -or- are you an under-funded site developer who lacks the vision to compete in the real-world?
Scan and skim friendly design and navigation would reduce these issues so the sole focus would be on the message and the process. If you don't know any graphic designers - go to a nearby college and advertise, join your local AIGA, call your rock-band friends and ask them who they'd call. The web is a different beast in a lot of ways, but solid design and navigational excellence isn't one of them.
Good luck to you in the project - it sounds like a fabulous gig.
