@MIT
There are several factors that plays a role here. First of all
Lets just ensure that you mean with hits, unique visitors if you are not, you might be getting allot less traffic than you think. If you mean unique visitors does this include or exclude bots?
Basically your site design should consider 4 basic marketing principles.
- acquisitions
- conversions
- retention
- recency
Without writing an entire marketing course I will focus on just a few remarks I have.
Acquisitions
How targeted are the "Hits" you are getting.
Is your traffic only from search engines, or is there any other marketing techniques at play here. Essentially the main objective is to ensure that the traffic you are getting is targeted. I can for example advertise my "real estate" site on a "porn" site and get millions of hits, but no conversions because it is simply unrelated.
What kind of wording is used in your marketing campaigns? Are visitors getting what they are expecting? This will be indicated by your statistics that will show a very high % leaving ratio for the same as the entry page or by having very little page views compared to the amount of visits.
Having little page views can also indicate that you need to review the look and feel of the site or the layout in general. It can also indicate the lack of information and content in general.
Conversions
Are you using any conversion methods? What do you regard as a conversion? If it is the closing of deal, what will make the visitor take that step? What will prevent the visitor to take that step? Are you assisting in any way to create a matter of urgency?
In this regard your website certainly need to have a few changes. If it is the sites in your signature. The sites is all about you. Your products and who you are. But my first question is, what makes you stand out from any of your competitors? What makes you special? Why should I make use of your service? So you do web design... so does millions of others, even my neighbor's son knows how to design one using Frontpage! What makes you different?
Retention
What kind of retention methods do you use? I do not see any indication of a newsletter, or blog or anything resembling a retention method. You are getting a thousand hits and they come and go. 5 minutes later they have forgotten about you already. What will make them come back?
Recency
How often do people return to your site? Do you know what your average recency is? Work at methods to increase this figure.
General remarks
On your homepage of the software developer site, you have for example a button that totally bugs me. "Request for quote" Think about it... does this seem like work for a visitor? On the SEO site you use "Free Quote" which is a slight improvement, but why? Why should I click there? What can I expect to be beneficial to me as a visitor for clicking there?
A quick scan through the software developer site, left me confused at to what the site is really about. I had to work to get the information, I had to really read to see what the site is all about.
The welcome section should not be there imo. The content provided there belongs on an "about us" page. That is a prime position of your site to tell the visitor what the company has to offer them. Put it in their face, do not make them work to see what the company can offer them. The central flash movie is very nicely done, however I would slim it down a bit so that I can be sure the HTML conversion text are visible to users immediately. You have only a few seconds to impress or they will go to the next site.
MIT, I really hope that these few remarks was helpful. I am sure you will get some good replies from this fine community, but at least think about these few points I mentioned.
