Craigslist continues to be a good source of traffic for me. I don't spam and only create a handful of ads a week, but the traffic continues and converts.

I agree with that. In free advertising, you need patience, hard work, and lots of time.

Depending on how you advertise..if you are doing posting in forums, it's effective.. if you are doing free viral marketing, its useless..

It is effective when you provide good content, useful technology product, or unique product.
It is almost impossible to gain power if you just want to create another free real estate directory, simple dating site, or sell your car stuff.

As a former advertising sales person who sold both radio and print I would strongly disagree. I stopped working for both industries when I realized one only one that benefited from this advertising was the companies that I worked for and not the customers.
I have made buckets of money over the years using free classifieds. I never have heard anyone say I will not do business with you because you are smart enough to use free resources. They praised my business acumen instead.
I formerly had a plant nursery and ran paid classifieds and spent a lot of money on these ads. We would always ask our customers how they heard about us and no one every said "I saw your ad in the newspaper." But they often said 'We saw you on Craigslist."
Craigslist usage where I live is a must do for reaching certain demographics. There is a very large demographic that will not purchase from businesses that use traditional marketing and these people love Craigslist.

It might be less effective but on some rare niche it could be helpful. And the best thing of all is its free.

When considering marketing your product/site/service, always take into consideration the trends ... For instance, with small newspaper subscription rates down about 30%, why advertise there? Gas is too expensive to drive, so billboards are about shot, and radio just can't beat XM or Sirius ... So if the current trend is advertising on the net, then do it. Beware of link farms, etc ... that will just kill your efforts, but research what people are looking at and target market them. Sometimes you can do this for pretty cheap ... As far as free is concerned ... Most likely, if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

Never underestimate the power of free advertising.
You can make a small fortune online without paying for advertising. However, it all depends upon your approach.

I think free advertising is the best advertising. Article marketing and all those other free link building techniques are actually more effective than paid advertising in my opinion.

In my experience, free marketing can be as effective as paid for promoting a website as long as you're targeting the right methods.
For example, submitting simple 5 minute videos to youtube & other video engines can be extremely potent to bringing real visitors to your site. Other methods that can bring real traffic include things like article & forum posting, Craigslist/social marketing, creating squidoo lenses...
