What's a better way to advertise your websites - text links or banner ads?

I've been thinking this over. It seems that you would get a better return on your investment if you advertise your website with banner ads rather than text ads. Banner ads are almost like having a tiny billboard advertisement on the side of the raod. All because the customer doesn't click on your ad doesn't mean you didn't make an impression on them or informed them that your business exists.

It really depends on what your site is all about and what site you advertise on. Say for example you have a photography or graphic related site, best is to advertise it through banner ads. If you advertise on a blog, a text link would be apt, especially if you use a catchy phrase on it

I would prefer a mix of both, but my preference would be text links. I say this because, banner ads can be appealing or enticing, but only if some one finds those ads.

Text link ads can also help in search engine rankings, which in turn result in more exposure, visibility and prospects.

Thank you

It totally depends what you're trying to accomplish. Banner ads work most beneficial for branding once a site is successful and established. They are fairly good at getting some word of mouth going as well. Text links work best to boost SEO. Having inbound text links will convince the search engines that your site is worth investigating - the more backlinks, the deeper the spiders will crawl and the more pages they'll index.

As others have already said it depends on the type you're trying to advertise, for graphic and visuals oriented sites, banner ads would be more appropriate for other sites text ads will do just as fine. Thats not saying that graphic oriented site should not run text ads, in the end it all comes down to what objective you're trying to achieve with your ad campaign and where you're advertising.

For SEO purpose - text ads - you get traffic from search engines by high SERPs.

For traffic purpose - banners - you get traffic from the site you placed banner.
Do both

Recently, google cracked down on companies that were selling text links because they want their "natural search" to be based on true citations.

Does this means that graphical links are now counted by google? I've always encouraged people to put up whichever type of link they wanted to my site. Do I have it wrong?
