Traffic exchange sites?
Someone just introduced me to a traffic exchange site... seems like a waste of time to a certain extent, but at the same time, could drive some targetted traffic to my sites... has anyone used these in the past? What are people's thoughts on them?

Explain traffic exchange? Trading banners, browsing for traffic or other methods.
I've not done any banner exchange programs so don't know how successful they can be but I have tried a couple and the only one that came any thing close to targeted traffic was TrafficSwarm but at the same time I was marketing to other webmasters that where doing the same thing.

I been looking into this as well. I am under the impression that it will help page rank too.
I got a free script to run it, but not sure how I really want to apply it to the site just yet. I was reading some posts about the reciprocal link doing anything for your rank. So I am considering putting the link exchange on a subdomain. Subdomain links to externals, externals link to parent domain.
I would appreciate any feedback

Yeah, those are the ones... I tried it for a while yesterday while watching TV... got lots of unique hits... no new members for the forum, but some adsense clicks as well...
But basically they're a waste of time... same with buying traffic, I would assume...

It can work. But 90% of the hits you will get are people not even looking at your site.

I'd say that at least 95% or even higher will not look at your site.

Hmmm... basically a waste of time... I'll give it a try and see what happens, I guess.

You could look into the way that warez and porn sites exchange traffic. Granted they're on the less moral end of the online business, but they still seem to grow huge, using traffic exchange scripts. Some even exchange blind traffic, but it's still targeted. I've been looking to try out this way of exchanging traffic, just need to set up a few sites and install some scripts. And get some initial traffic, of course.

I have used them and still do sometimes - I've had "tons" and "tons" of sales of website templates from those exchanges. So I guess it all depends on what business you're in if they work for you or not. Definetly has worked for me as far as $$'s go.

Yep - from the sites I do see there in those exchanges I really can't see how on earth they make money... apart from the actual traffic exchanges themselves who sell traffic. Most are marketing to other marketers so it's pretty pointless. But as for me - well it's been pretty good

Hi, I am new here and I can not believe what I read.
If you are talking about those traffic exchanges like Traffic Swarm, Webmasterquest, Nomorehits... then I can assure you that they work pretty good. All you have to do is to advertise a Lead Generating Website to get the email adresses of your visitors and follow up on them. Adding some scripts to your LGW can triple your signup rate. This way I get an average of 8 leads for every 1000 pageviews. I can generate these 1000 pageviews in about 1 hour.
The free traffic exchanges are my favorite source of traffic! You can read more about them in my free ebook (look at my signature file)
regards
Guido

I would rather have Search Engine traffic on a highly searched keyword rather than traffic exchanges(non targeted)

Yeah, I was talking about sites like Webmasterquest... I guess if you're using those sites to promote other traffic-related sites, they could work well... but if I were promoting my photography forum, for example, it's practically useless... I got lots of uniques, sure, but other than that, pretty much nothing...

Yes, I have only tried marketing related websites. But you should try to build a Lead Generating Website and offer a free ebook about photography in exchange for the email adresses of your visitors.
You must write a great ebook and write a great text for your LGW, then it might work. I think there are lots of people in the traffic exchanges who would like to read an ebook about photography and in some exchanges you can even target your visitors.
Try it, measure your results and then you will know.

Guido

Hey
Brief intro about myself... I'm a PHP programmer, and have been making traffic exchange scripts for quite some time now (3 years), and run a few exchanges of my own.
The main problem with traffic exchanges, yes, is because the hits really aren't too targeted unless you are in the marketing "sector".
I am in the works of creating an exchange that will allow you to select categories for your site, so the traffic you receive will be targeted.
A Traffic Exchange Alliance is in the works to make traffic exchanges known on the web. The reason traffic isn't really targeted is because not many people know about Traffic Exchanges. Thats what this alliance is about.. Its not to waste your time so we can make money, its to make Traffic Exchanges known around the web, and to set some guidelines for exchange owners.
I'd like to encourage you guys to try out exchanges periodically to see how we are doing, and to not dismiss all exchanges just because a few aren't good (hence the reason for those guide lines). I'll try to post again in here when I get my exchange going with all the categories, and we'll see if that gets better results for different audiences.
Tim

The only people that use traffic exchanges are people that really need the raw stats or people that want to cheat someone like Fastclick.
