Promoting your site with Social Bookmarking

Hello,

I am a little bit confused about marketing a website with social bookmarking. I mean, I cannot see how you can promote apart from simply adding your web to the social bookmarking site. I assume that the rest depends on the users rating your web, because if you try to push it, that would be considered spam, right? So how can you make that your web is on the top list of a social bookmarking site without spamming?

You go for instance to Stumble Upon or Digg, you register yourself as a user and add your web, then what? I mean you only depend on your content and how users rate it, am I right?

I would appreciate someone that could clarify my ideas.

I recommend you put the StumbleIt button ON your website. Any users that happen upon your site will then be aware that they can "stumble it" directly.

The Stumble link looks like this:

Code:
http://www.stumbleupon.com/submit?url=http://your-URL.com&title=Title%20of%20your%site note: the %20 = an URL encoded whitespace
I believe there is a page on Stumbleupon.com that has the details on how to do this with their image icons too.

This form of linking also applies to del.icio.us too and other social bookmarking sites.

Another option is to purchase sponsored Stumbles directly form StumbleUpon. I did this last week and it got me nearly 1000 new visitors over the day that I ran it on. Unfortunatly for me the "bounce rate" (the people that just carried on stumbling rather than staying on site) was quite high, and not really worth the money I spent (even for a non-profit website like mine).

If you still want to look into this, see their advertising offering: http://stumbleupon.com/ads

P.S Why have you posted this thread twice?

you don't promote to social bookmark site, you use social news site which often people got it confused. Social news site got more traffic than a book mark site.

as someone pointed out, a good content is the key but also don't forget to add your related links in your article

hopes that help

I am webmaster of http://www.alexa.com/data/details/ma...rtunehotels.in, doing social tagging for this site. Is social bookmaring helping to improve alexa ranking?

That is the basic approach but excellent content which can strike a chord with a wide audience is hard to come by.

There is little return.

For someone just starting out in this here's what I recommend.

Do some homework. Look at your competition's websites - see what they did, find out what they offer and offer it, MORE IMPORTANLY - find out what they don't provide and provide it.

Look at their meta tags, look at their headers, links and construction of their pages. Don't copy it exactly, but use it as an example.

Make your pages load fast - I'd rather be number 7 with a fast loading page than number 1 with a slow loading page.

Entice people - don't think you can tell them where to go, what to see and what path to take to get there. Don't get fancy, keep it simple. They didn't come to your site to see how good a web designer you are. They came for a product or service.

Define your goals (a goal isn't - make money) One goal may be to increase conversion by 10% in 2 months, now form objectives to get there. Watch the sites stats to see if you have obtained the goal. If you haven't work harder, form more objectives.

Out work your competition and you will have a sucessful site. Exchange links and worry about PR and you will fail like 99.9% of the websites on the net.

The only people who worry about getting links are people selling them and people who fell for the scam.

NEVER - link to anyone elses site. If the information is worth linking to then it is worth putting in the time to include it on your site......Don't send your visitors away....

You want them to stay. Aways add new material and content (to reach your goals and to increase return visitors).

Get a good stats program like surfstats or webtrends and learn to analyze them.

Example if only 8% of your visitors ever see your home page - that's good. That means people are finding what they are searching for, they go directly to the page that contains the information and hopefully take an action there -

"Action?" they call you (have a phone number there) they contact you - contact information. Or they follow a link to an enticement you have on the page.

Out work your competition.

Remember you don't need to take on the world. You don't need to get all the traffic, just your fair share.

Don't just spam Netscape and other social bookmark sites with every article on your site, as it's not news worthy and will get you banned pretty quickly
