Promoting your web in Social Bookmarking sites

Hello,

I am a little bit confused about marketing a website with social bookmarking techniques. I mean, I cannot see how you can promote your content apart from simply adding your web to the social bookmarking site. I assume that the rest depends on the users rating your web, because if you try to push it, that would be considered spam, right? So how can you make that your web is on the top list of a social bookmarking site without spamming?

You go for instance to Stumble Upon or Digg, you register yourself as a user and add your web, then what? whats the next step?

I would appreciate someone that could clarify my ideas.

then, if your lucky enough and your site get click then it's good. if your marketing something then it's a good thing that your site is been recognized.

It's an entire process, not just one site one time. Also since you would be "marketing" you need to find those communities that allow that sort of thing - or face some serious flaming (or worse). You need to map out a strategy, who what where when and then post consistently within your chosen spots. It's work to get it right

you must be focucused on what is your target. be specific. & thats the way to move in social bookmarking.

Social bookmarking is a great way to market your site. Also a source of backlinks that help in SERP and some also pass on PR juice. Doing it the right way would would definitely help in drawing traffic to your site.

You are allowed to add your own content on most social bookmarking sites. Do this and it lowers your risk of spam:

Mix you content in with actual other sites you like
Put only max 50 links per account
Put only your best content

Advanced:

Make sure your boomarks are public and bookmark your bookmarks
Use bookmarks that allow bookmarking by feed: faves, yahoo web 2.0

Each bookmark site is VERY different. For instance you can throw anything at all up on Delicious or Danogo, but Newsvine is ruthless about spam and wont allow self promotion. Digg users can be unforgiving ONLY if your content is spammy - but I have never had problems with quality posts there.
