Here are the basic laws of web business:
1. Own your own domain
2. Add content or get others to do it
3. Sell advertising or products on the content
4. Promote the content
5. Get visitors
6. Retain the visitors with registration
7. Email the visitors and point them to the content
8. Repeat
Learn how to do that first then innovate on top of it.

I agree with most of the points but I am skeptical about emailing the visitors to point them to the content. Most people are turned off by the constant emails unless you are able to make the content really interesting.

Here's the trick (if you can call it a trick), work harder than your competition.
You outwork them - you win.
There is no easy get rich fast solution or fast track to seo - outwork them.
That's why I charge so much, I study the competition, base my price on how much work I have to put in to beat the pants off the other guys.
Sometimes I may have to go up against teams of inhouse seo guys, not a problem most are lazy. Just put in the time and you'll kick their butts.
I laugh at those ads online qouting a price to do SEO before they even look at the clients site. Give me a brake, they're just slapping up some metas, filling in the body and cramping some archors. They keep me in business.....lol
I do take on special jobs, like a company that has bad reviews coming up when people typed in a few phrases, the company wants to knock them out. I do it with hard work and some old blackhat tricks.

My advice would be to read as much as you possibly can on the topic, plus study high-profile internet moguls.
If you tell us what niche you're looking to go into we can probably help you out more

First of all, I suggest you research more on Internet marketing and running an online business before taking a plunge.
You can either set up a blog or a website. Choose the niche on which you have knowledge on and passionate about. Being able to provide excellent, useful and original content would play a big factor in determining how successful you will be in the industry
The list goes on.......

You should first decide on what type of internet business you want to do. Once you are focused on a particular subject it will be much easier for you to choose your options and work on it.
Having your own website is imperative as that will be your workplace on the internet from where you'll be able to generate revenues.

Mark has hit the nail on the head. There are a wide range of excellent comments in this thread. However without knowing the specific niche that you are looking to dive into it is really hard to be specific other than giving just the basics of what to study.
The only real piece of advice that I can share is this. Unless you have a fantastic software or graphics design site, I would strongly stay away from both internet marketing and affiliate marketing. These two markets are extremely saturated right now. Again that also depends on the financial capital that you can put into your business venture.
As for what you are looking to get into online remember that if you have a passion for what you are into then you will more than likely succeed to the fullest. There is no such thing now a days as getting rich quick. It is all about the research and staying just one little babystep ahead of your competition. Never forget where you come from and when you do make it big remember that money CANNOT buy you everything (however it sure can rent ANYTHING for at least an hour...lol...j/k)
Oh one final thing...when you learn about email marketing I recommend that you do a search for a program called email promotions. It is extremely informational along with free...Make sure that you are completely organized in what ever area you are looking to get into and have small goals set and nothing ridiculously out of the norm that you can't accomplish. Once you make $100.00 shoot for $1000.00, etc.

I want to appreciate this part of your post though I would concur with the rest as well as what you've said is so true in real sense and that is what everyone should keep in mind while doing any kind of job, business (or may be anything) in their life's.

First is to know your goal and what to know about the online business. Research and Analyze the market on how they become successful in their online business. What are the services behind the online business? You may also read some tutorial or tips about online business.

full house...I do not know if trying to study SEO should be the first concern for anyone. The thing about SEO is that for a lot of new people (myself included) it is such a boring a drab thing. SEO is not as important as it used to be back in the day. There are entirely too many new technologies out that help to speed things up. For instance blogging, social networking, backlinks, article marketing, etc. I am sure that you get the point.
Please do not misunderstand me. I am not saying that SEO is not important, it is just my humble opinion that it is not the "first" thing to worry about.

I'm inclined towards agreeing with you as SEO would be for later stages when you really know what's working for you and want to promote the site later but yeah one cannot ignore its important.

learn affiliate marketing and SEO first. no need to buy anything yet just read free materials first. and while doing it look for credible personality. the good stuff online is usually something you have to paid for. biz is about investment. no investment no biz.

well most of us started by narrowing down the market into
a specific market group. sooner or later, you'll need to
expand ur portfolio.
since u have an experienc eon this field, you may still
need to test our the marketability. things change a lot so fast.

I would say research first then find a niche that you are familiar or comfortable with then start from there

Don't even think to create affiliate store or sign up for stupid services like "Get rich fast".
To make money online you should sell your product or service. Turning hobby into internet business is the best way to make money online.
