Online retail in 2000 and 2008
Do you know that in 2000 over 70% online sales happened in independent stores owned by simple people and online companies.
In 2007-2008 over 60% online sales happened on web sites which belong to regular retailers like Wall-Mart, Target, Victoria Secret, K-Mart... etc
Large retail companies use strategies to kick little businesses and entrepreneurs away from online market.

It's too easy to build a site and sell it...
Ebay is another one that buys up the competition whenever they get a chance.

eBay they are more like broker which unite customers with small business owners. I am talking about sites like www.target.com vs. my-little-corner-store + mike-pet-store + favorite-coins-from-bill

Small websites will always have their marketshare. You just have to provide good idea, great customer service, and generate word of mouth.
Web store which sells shoes will be kicked out of business in 3-10 years because large retail companies will do everything to steal customers. From another side, store which sells supplies for poi dancers will stay in business because they target small niche.

Online retail business became very competitive these days. Small businesses generally does not have a huge variety of products to offer; whereas big ones does. People probably feel more comfortable with big names anyways.

yup... my thoughts same..
Only way they can survive is to offer competitive price and better service.
For price all the Small retailers can join hands while purchasing and give services like home delivery, online order... etc etc.
I know it's easy said then done but no choice... also we can help promote through SEO, SMO.........What say.

Yep, but big companies can offer better price because they can save more on delivery, postage, storage, manufacture...
If you make your own knifes and sell them online you expect to get $20 for each you made, but Wall-Mart can bring the same knifes from China for $0.5 peace selling for $10. Moreover, you will be charging customer for delivery when Wall-Mart will offer free delivery through postal company which gives them huge discounts.

The days of eBay are over. It's only a matter of time before they either go out of business or are bought out. They have stopped catering to small sellers offering quality products, but instead, give Chinese dropshippers of refurbished and slightly used items (marketed as new of course) a big advantage.

People should be more social on eBay... or eBay should think how to make ebay more like social network where community will decide which seller are good and which seller s**k.
