please help me understand something - my alexa rank was about 640,000 now three months later i have gotten more traffic than i have ever had in the past three months and still growing (about 45k a month) but my alexa rank has since depleted to 830,000...................................why?

I'm not really sure how to get an Alexa ranking actually, could someone explain that too please? What does it do and what is it for?

well your alexa ranking tells you basically how popular your website is. themore people that visit your website-----the higher (lowe) your alexa rank is and more popular your site is. its a really good marketing gimmick to have a good alexa rank - basically if you have a lot of people visiting your site your probably in alexa.

I would not be too concerned since Alexa ranking is based on end users who have agreed to use Alexa`s tool bar. Which means that most of your visitors are not using the bar which could be the reason for your ranking going up.

Alexa ranking is a good tool but keep in mind that it is only a sampling of the whole picture. Even Alexa states that it can not be for certain what percentage of your ranking is correct.

I normally gage that it is probably off by about 30 to 40%. What matters most is if you are making any money or not. You did put up a website to make money? In my case, I have noticed that the better my ranking with Alexa the more money I brought in.

Which does not mean anything. I just launched a new site which took close to a year to complete. Started out with a ranking of over 2 Million, now shows 800,000 for three month period and 157,000 over a one week period but the money is slow in coming.

So thinking I had Alexa figured all out, it`s back to the drawing board.

Hi

Example:

Three months before:
-You had 1000 visitors three months before and 900 visitors had alexa toolbar out of those 1000 visitors.

Now three months after:
- You have 3000 visitors and you increase 2000 visitors compare to three months before, but only 200 visitors has alexa toolbar in their browser out of 3000 visitors.

Result:
Alexa will do the math that you had 900 visitor before now you have 200 visitors because when these 900 and 200 visitors visit your site alexa would know about that.

In this case, those 2800 people doesn't use alexa than alexa would not know about them.

Who use internet explore they use google/yahoo/alexa and who use firefox they don't have alexa toolbar so you do the math by looking at your visitors that how many people used firefox three months before and now. I am sure that your firefox user must have been increase now than before.

Below three things are more important than any toolbars

1) Main thing is get links as many as you can.
2) increase your business
3) increase ranking in top Search engines

Alexa is not a very reliable source of popularity information.

The best way to see how popular your site is? Do some Google searches under the most popular key words for your industry.

Only a (relatively) small portion of the internet is surfed with the Alexa Toolbar activated, hence the discrepancy in your own numbers VS Alexa's.

I'm happy to read your web site is doing good, though ; )

Alexa site ranking is a combination of not only website traffic, but also page views per user.

Example: 300 unique visitors a day with an average page views on a website of 25

Example 2: 600 unique visitors a day with a average page view of 3

Example 2 would rank lower because of the page views from the traffic.

So, try to keep the peoples' attention and get them to view more pages and make the site more exciting with polls and stuff to keep them going. Page rank is nice, but it's not everything. The key thing is profit, unless you are running a free site that you hope for it to explode and get good advertising $$ from it. Then you need a kick butt page rank for it. Just think of what your goal is, and go for it. If it's affiliate programs, you just want traffic to pour in to make dollars off of that.

830k is inaccurate, install the Alexa bar and you should see some improvements. Not that Alexa is accurate in any shape or form but it does help if you rank higher there

And that small portion are mostly webmasters that's why webmaster sites ranks so high on Alexa.

@OP If you're getting the toolbar, the IE one is detected as spyware by most antivirus, you can use alexa sparky if you are on firefox.

Hi ... alexa just up-dated its method, of extrapolating from tool bar users to all users, tool bar installed or not. Check Alexa for details. Although I did not like what happened, when the new method was implemented, there are some indications Alexa may be more precise, now. For example, I use StatCounter, for official site statistics. Over the past week or two, Alexa and StatCounter have more or less agreed on unique page views. The two have not coincided in the past 2 years. Ultimately, Alexa, as the PR, are important to the general user, if not webmasters. Hope this helps. Good luck.

me too, in alexa my rank too bad. this will misleading others opinion about my site... coz I got my own forum with more than 8000 people.... I have take a look my site stat and it really different with Alexa about 40%

Another thing to remember is age demographics. Kids will install the tool bar. Old people will not. If a site doesn't do well on alexa there is a good change younger people don't go to it.
I have a site that alexa ranks in the 50K and it makes very little money. Another site has really bad ranking and makes 3 times more money than the first site does. Why? Kids don't have money to spend, middle age people do.

So using alexa to rank your site is a bad joke. Look at your own server report and learn what the demographics are for your site and gear things to that age group.
