How did you break into being a self-employed Web Designer?

OK, I am wondering how you free-lancers got your start in the web design business.

What did it take for you to get your business off the ground:

• Banded with other people who had skill where you didnt?
• B.S. (That stands for Big Smile, if you were confused )
• Great marketing plan?
• Killer portfolio? (fake of course, because you are just staring out)
• Apprenticed for a big firm?

I'm no web design guru...but I have worked with a number of web designers. Here's what I would recommend based on what I look for:

1. Design a website! Be it for a friend, small business, whatever! You HAVE to have something to show, and more importantly- Once you put a design out there, there are hundreds of thousands of people that will see it, and could possibly ask about your services. If possible, place an indiscreet link to your site on the 'starter' sites you build.

2. Who do you know? Guaranteed there is already someone in your circle that needs or knows someone in need of a website. Send out a quick email to all of your friends...see what happens!

3. Elance/Guru- it may be a cutthroat freelancer world, but it's a great place to interact with people that are ready to spend $$ on projects. DON'T send 'templated' project responses. Show a true interest and understanding of the clients that post jobs. And provide quick and courteous customer service...at least that's what I look for.

4. AdWords- there's a reason it's so successful. Try a locally targeted ad for a web designer. I guarantee you you'll get some business* Although this depends entirely on how you set up your landing pages and how much money you want to spend!

5. Never give up- Your situation isn't just a web design issue. It's an issue of dealing with starting and successfully running your own business. Remember that nothing will ever be as hard as your first sale/project. If you are a good designer and do a good job, you will eventually find good people that want to do good business.
