vbulletin? Is it worth it?

I am currently using MyBB.

Is it worth upgrading the forum to vbulletin?

If so should I wait till its bigger or would it be worth it to convert it sooner rather than later?

i would like to know the same thing myself. it seems that some of the most active forums on the web are VBulliten. im running phpbb myself

If you got a lot of members already, let's say for example this forum (v7n), yes it is worth to upgrade your current forum to vBulletin, other wise it is not worth it.

As far as I know, just about any forum software database can be imported into vB. I doubt it would matter if you did it now or later.

I was part of forum management on another vB forum that "assimilated" several other forums through acquisition. In all cases, the import of their databases was fairly smooth. (SMF, InvisionPB, and a couple others I can't recall at the moment)

Is it worth it? I would say yes. Is it necessary? That would be up to you. Some of the free forum software out there is becoming very robust these days.

I guess, as previous people have said, it all depends on what you need out of a forum.

I babysit a VBulletin forum and I have to say, for what we need it for, we could just as well do with SMF. However, someone else pays for the license and everyone's used to it so that's all well and good

Another point to consider for some would be that many popular Forums are backed by VBulletin so perhaps for the sake of usability, you might want to "go with the flow" and make life easier for visitors that might be members of other popular forums. Just a thought.

You can take the forum with you if you shut a site down and start a new one. You can even sell it if you don't need it. So really it's not a bad investment.

vBulletin is a fantastic piece of software. It makes the back end tasks so much easier to deal with, like managing members, posts, and it comes with a great selection of modules/templates at vbulletin.org.

However, phpBB3 now does a lot of what vBulletin/Invision/etc do, the only downside is it's quite new and there aren't as many mods/styles for it as the other ones.

I would say if you're site makes the money then get vBulletin, but if it doesn't make enough then go with phpBB3 as it's free.

just forget abt IPB, they are money sucking company ...
their life time license only last you for six month.

Nothing new, but uh... yeah! VB is worth it. I purchased 2 licenses for 2 different domains. The integration process is great.

Kind of off topic, but how much is vBulletin? Is it a one time fee or monthly thing?

I have a PHPBB forum (which is free), but lacks some functionality that vBulletin seems to have.

I've pondered switching, but am scared of the price tag as the forum makes pennies a day with advertisements.

Yup! Especially when you consider what you get and, as someone else mentioned earlier in the thread, you can always sell any license you're not using.

Regardless of the price what I like most of vBulletin is their support. If I have problem with the forum, I have somebody expert in it to help. I am Asp .Net guy, and most good forum softwares a re in php. For me its important to have the support.

I have run a couple forums and vBulletin is definitely worth the money. The admin panel is much nicer and there are many more options on the backend. Also, from what I can tell it uses far fewer resources than phpBB etc. (although any forum software is a huge server load to run.)
