Question What is your greatest fear about running an online business?

If you run an online business, be it a e-shop, content site, blog or other outlet, what is your greatest fear?

How much, if it all, do you worry about:
  • Downtime
  • Getting Hacked
  • Losing Data
  • Getting sued

I spend so much of my time dealing with the technical aspects of running online operations, I often don't think about the emotional ones.

Just curious about your input. I once had a person tell me that they could not sleep for weeks after their site got hacked. They were worried it would happen again.

I know when I first started as a freelance computer consultant, I really worried if I could maintain a steady income. Had good months and bad months and found it quite stressful.

I think any online person can not access any one if the victim is not a dull person.

rackaid...
There are somethings that are beyond your control...

If you worry about the things that you have no control over ...you will worry yourself into an early grave...

Concentrate on the factors that you can control...take the appropriate measures to insure that the "bad stuff" will not occur...

(ie..back-ups, legal research, etc) and move forward.....

If the turtle never stuck his head out of the shell...he would not go anywhere...

Maintain a positive attitude...tempered with the a modicum of caution and good judgment...and do it..

When in doubt...you can always ask on this forum...))

Getting sued would be on the bottom of my list of things to worry about.

You have Ts and Cs to cover downtime and issues that could leave you in a position to be sued.

I dont worry too much about hackers as i know we have in place as much protection as possible.

Backups and Dataloss are my only worrys ( other than going bankrupt )
However i backup every day and when X amount of change has happened.

So theres a max of 24hr's data loss.

Thanks that's the type of input I am looking for. I don't worry about many of these things but suspect many small business starting online do. Just trying to get a sense of what the fears are. Doing some research for a blog post or possible magazine article.

My greatest fear is scam and lots of false internet business and false success stories. These are the things that attract new people to the online business and I was one of the sufferer of it when I first come to this business back in late 2007.

You cant be fearful of anything, be positive and take the proper precautions, you cant do any more then that. Negative things do happen its a part of living but to worry about these things will become preventive and negative towards your goal.

Google & its Ongoing changes that may prove a bigger challenge for SEOs. Online businesses are more than 40-60% or may be above depend on Google referred visitors.

I own a porn site which was acquired as part of a larger deal last year. That's the only site that I have some trepidation about owning because occasionally users upload questionable content and I don't know about it until one of the moderators alerts me.

That also matters to me! and I think everyone in this business does and it is natural. The thing is how to think for countermeasures.

The greatest fear in my opinion is the unknown. The thing that you cannot predict and that you have no impact on it.

Mine is fear of failure. I feel resistance when I am about to launch something because I am scared to fail!

I think my greatest fear is getting hacked. I mean there's a chance you could lose all your hard work just like that to some unscrupulous people. That's why my antivirus program is always updated to the latest version but then the thoughts of losing your effort just like that can sometimes get you worried.

My biggest fear is Google slapping us! So far we have been lucky and got some good placements from Google but the big G can be mean when they want to!

If you have your own backup of the site and don't just rely on the web hosting for backup (because they could have backed up the hacked site) then you have nothing to worry about.

I have exactly the same problem, it also causes me to procrastinate a lot also, Just imagine what we could accomplish without that fear of failure?!

Instead of failure my greatest fear is to get payment on time from customers. When I was doing job in a software house, some of clients run away without paying to us after completion of work.

I am sure this will not happen in my own business.

Being totally honest.

I've been trying for over a year to make a living online and have just over $25 in my adsense account and $2.50 in my Amazon account.

My biggest fear is that it's never going to get better. I don't believe that is a rational fear, but it is a fear that I have nonetheless.
