For my business, the thing most instrumental to success was a burning desire to succeed. There were many, many times where I felt like I was wasting my time and energy, and I should go do something easier. Looking back, that inner resistance seems silly.

The desire to succeed, coupled with a steadfast REFUSAL to quit (or take days off) are what did it for me. Of course, being 110% confident you're offering a great product and customer service is huge too. My two cents.

Personally, when i stopped trying to get traffic through the search engines and focused on direct traffic from social media, forums, banner ads, solo ads, paid classifieds and started building my list. 90% of my traffic comes direct to my websites and it is the most controlled traffic IMO. search engine traffic is uncontrolled and i will not depend on such traffic to feed my kids.

Since,I have been doing web development for the last 5 years,I think Squidoo and Hub pages for link building,a regular updated blog with some good content with some long-tailed keywords will be better to bring more traffic too.
