I really needed this blog post this weekend. lol
Quote:
No matter how good of a business person you are or how motivated you might be about reaching your goals, there will always be times when you just plain don’t want to get to work. Maybe it’s a big project you’re stalling on at the office or maybe you’re staring down the end of the second week in a row you’ve skipped your gym workouts. Anyone want to comment on the 17 ways? Do all of them sound familiar?

Start small, finish big. I love getting a few easy things crossed off my list first!

Those are good points for sure... but I've found that trying to overcome procrastination is trying to cut out the branches instead of cutting the roots itself.
Here's a great video I saw which opened up my eyes about what procrastination is and what we can do to move beyond it-- without having to muster the willpower everytime to 'overcome' it... How to Overcome Procrastination!

The last one for me...I find that if I just take that little tiny step that momentum will build.

I'm guilty of it, I'm slowly working on it, I'd say so far, so good, much to improve.

This is so true. Even when I make a schedule that I'm supposed to follow there are just times that I get this feeling of being burnt out. The article makes a good point of rewarding yourself. If you worked a regular job you get rewards and recognition for a job well done and feel good. I think I just don't reward myself enough.

To me, procrastination ends when I see my business slide or rankings drop and I get super angry that I have to try harder and harder. This puts me on a week long rampage where I put in about 16 hours of work a a day until the next week where I start procrastinating and twittering again

Tip number 6, definitely. I'll pick the easy ones first so that I can get the momentum to finish the other tasks just as fast. Tip number 9's pretty cool, too -- challenging yourself just so that the organization that you don't like won't benefit out of something that you weren't able to do.

To be honest, procrastination along with my weakness for the newest traffic gimmick on the block, has been one of the single biggest hurdles to success. I finally adopted a somewhat regimented approach to work, and only do certain tasks during certain times. For example, I only open my email 2 times a day (once at 9AM and once again at 4PM), with a 30 minute window for responding. Any email I don't get to in the morning, gets answered during the 4PM session. Creating content or site work takes place between 7-9 AM and then again from 9:30 to 10:30. I work in small blocks of time, but stay super focused for those short periods. At the end of the day, if I've completed all my to-do tasks, I get a little "goof off" time to surf the web or facebook. My productivity has nearly doubled as I use to be a slave to email and stop whatever I was doing to deal with incoming email.

Open emails twice a day? That would kill me, emails sat there. Might be an order!

True, but think about it like this from an e-commerce perspective:
At 9AM any orders that came in prior to that time are processed and shipped, and then the same thing happens again at 4PM.
Any ecommerce order placed that day gets shipped out the same day up until 4PM.
Like anything else in life, what works for me certainly may not work for others.
