when the past comes back to haunt us...

I haven't been on in a couple of days, and would like to compliment everyone on their photos. I've been struggling with finding a non-plant-related subject to photograph...the cardinal I saw this morning disappeared by the time I could grab the camera However, I did get a shot of my adorable great-niece getting acquainted with a sunflower at her mother's bridal shower today.

Catching up

I think I missed a post a day or so ago, so I'm catching up. While going through hundreds of my husband's old family photos and clippings this evening, I ran across an envelope my mother-in-law kept of the things my father-in-law brought back his time in the US Navy during WWII. I also found a poem/letter that his brother Wally wrote (they were in the service at the same time) that helped connect me with the events of that time. I took a photo of the poem/letter with currency that my father-in-law brought back scattered about. There's a picture of his ship as well, although I don't know the name of it. Wally's poem/letter reads:

"It was 1941, Dec. 7th
When across the sky came those sons of heaven.
They bombed the ships and wrecked the planes,
And left the homes burning in flames.
They killed the men and they killed the women
But worst of all they killed the children
The men at Pearl Harbor didn't have a chance
The bombs shook the little island like an avalanche.
They got Wake and Midway and Guam
But at Wake and Midway they got a reception that was warm.
A lot of men have gone to war since then,
The butcher, the baker, and the barber.
But they have all gone for one cause,
The remembrance of Pearl Harbor.

R,
Walter F. Endyke
C.C.H.S. UBI

Uncle Wally had 7 kids, and his 18 nieces and nephews loved him dearly for his ability to have fun. The killing of children tore at his heart...

Cricket, I didn't have the heart to take a picture today. It's been pouring the entire day and I couldn't put up a picture of that when Texas is suffering so

Day 8: Reminder

I lost a long time friend this morning. This evening my daughter and granddaughter came to visit. This photo is a reminder to me to never ignore an opportunity to spend time with those you love.

He was a 23 year old local boy, and this was his fifth season fighting fires. He was a Team Leader, looked up to by all; the guy who always got things right. He was looking forward to starting his new life after graduating college last December.

The wind shifted Thursday, trapping him and 2 team members in the canyon where they were trying to get ahead of it.

His funeral is today. Meantime, the fire is 60% contained, smoke still hangs in the air, and while we say goodbye to him, our prayers are also with the ones still out there fighting.

Yesterday's photo:

A reusable sandwich bag I finished late last night. The bag is for Molly, the photo is for a tutorial.

Sunday's photo:

Our exercise for the day. It's only 16 yards of mulch; last time my dad ordered 19 yards.

Isaiah and me. (aka- A blatant attempt to post a really cute photo in place of the one I was too busy to take on Saturday.)

Isaiah (and an extremely blatant attempt to bribe Cricket into pretending I took this photo last Friday...)

TxPam - my condolences to you on the loss of your friend, and the beautiful shot of your granddaughter. Our loved ones are a gift to cherish.

Lauren - my prayers are with the families in their loss. Those men were heroes and we are in their debt.

Kelly - that is an amazing shot. We don't have red dragonflies here, ours are blue-green!

AmySue - your garlic shot is cute. The one on the lower left looks like Pinocchio! And where on earth do you put all that mulch? I have a lot of landscaped areas and I only go through 4 yards max!

and finally, Cricket, the magnolia photo is beautiful - black and white is perfect for that shot.
