"Making conservative assumptions, we think that about 100,000 excess deaths, or more have happened since the 2003 invasion of Iraq"

Quote:
The new figures are based on surveys done by the researchers in Iraq in September 2004. They compared Iraqi deaths during 14.6 months before the invasion in March 2003 and the 17.8 months after it by conducting household surveys in randomly selected neighborhoods.
Quote:
Previous estimates based on think tank and media sources put the Iraqi civilian death toll at up to 16,053
Quote:
The researchers did 33 cluster surveys of 30 households each, recording the date, circumstances and cause of deaths.

You poll 33 households and then apply those results to the entire population? Bringing the death toll from 16,053 to over 100,000? That's not right at all. Sounds like a crazy way of guessing if you ask me.

Quote:
Our results need further verification
No kidding.

33 cluster surveys of 30 households each would be polling 990 households would it not?

Still not anywhere near accurate. The more accurate way of counting deaths is through death records.

Death records? In Iraq?

I don't know if 100,000 is accurate or not. I've read that most estimates say the civilian body count is over 16,000. It's not difficult to believe 50,000+ Iraqi soldiers have been killed.

At any rate it's appalling!

Is 16,000+ anywhere near as acceptable? We're talking civilians. Women and children. That works out to about 28 innocent civilians per day have been killed. That's not even counting those who have been devastated, left homeless, maimed and mangled.

Is there an acceptable number of deaths? When the allies took back Europe and China and dozens of other countries from the Axis, do you think that civilian deaths were avoided? Somehow I think this generation has a difficulty with reality. People die. Life isn't fair. Children die every day - hit by cars, trains, etc. Is that acceptable? Or should we outlaw cars and trains and knives and hamburgers and electricity?

I think making statements that may the current "war" to most any semi legit war puts the current "war" out of contenxt.

Yes, but I'm sure not nearly enough.

Yes, but only because we've little to no choice.

No. I don't believe that we should.

I believe that we are conned into believing that by our political vote, we have a choice of significance, when in reality our political votes are absolutely insignificant, due to the political process itself. There has to be a better way, doesn't there?

I dunno... maybe not.

Well you'd better stay clear of them. Look at what they're doing to your head, also, it's bobbing and your face is red as a beet..

The dead toll of the Iraq people will last for the next 400 years. At this very moment misformed and handicapped children are born in Iraq because of the tons of deleted uranium (nuclear waste) that has been dropped in the cities. It's a disgrace that this has happened but what can we do? When super powers don't care about the Geneva convention and human rights who is going to stop them?

All of these Iraqi deaths are a smal price to pay for...What are they dying for again? Oh yeah, DEMOCRACY! We'll have to wait to see how that all works out.

Aren't we spending billions of dollars on weapons that are supposed to be precision-guided in order to prevent civilian deaths?

I guess I just have "difficulty with reality." Wait, if this is so acceptable, why isn't it reported on the news?

And they wonder why people have thrown their hands up in disgust with not only gov't in general, but even in the UN and NATO and whichever other groups have been created to protect the people of this planet.

The powers that be don't care. Look at that google search. There's no shortage of information about it out there and they know that we know but that we're powerless to do anything about it. At least that is how I feel about it.

For all the advancements we've made, it's a shame that there are always people there to turn them around and use them to harm others. Scares me to think of what other great scientific advancements will be used as WMD in the future.
