John, this is a pretty much expected situation if you come in to a country with tools. I get hard times fromt the US border people when I bring documents to mail from within the US. And if you told them off, well, what did you expect? A lollypop, or a bottle of maple syrup?
Next time you're coming back to the US from abroad try an experiment: tell the US border people of when they start askign questions where you went and what you did. See how that compares to Canadian borders guards.
On international borders, any borders, the rule is simple - you DO NOT tell them off. They can, and will give you hard time if you try to be too smart, and that doesn't depend whether it's Canada, US or any othr country.
