Leaving early? As in the school? How about not attending the school in the first place.
The president arrived at the school shortly before 9am. The first plane hit was beginning to be shown on TV at approx. 8:48am.
Multiple accounts state that Bush was made aware of the first hit while in the motorcade on the way to the school. Yet he still went in.
He was told of the second at approx. 9:05am during the reading of the book. The President STILL continued to sit in the classroom blanched with fear to complete his soft photo-op. Reports have him leaving the classroom approx. 9:16am. Ten minutes went by after the President found out that a second plane had hit before he did anything.
Does that sound like he was calm cool and collected to you? It was ignorant, irresponsible, and it goes to show his incompetence and the incompetence of those who he surrounded himself with.
So to me the question is not "why didn't the president get up and leave," it should be "why in the hell did the president ever go in in the first place?"

Why do you think he needed to leave the school at all?

Okay so you both just think that the President should just sit back and do nothing to take any control of the situation? That there was approximately a half hour lapsed between him finding out the first plane hit and him doing anything and you both find that to be vindicating him? Holy hell.
What in the hell do you suppose the Commander in Chief should do when his country is under attack John? And in your dream situation, where does reading My Pet Goat rank?

I don't know....
I doubt we'll get a conviction out of your post and that video, though. You know?

I asked you why you think he should have left. Is his leaving the classroom going to make an iota of difference? The President doesn't micro-manage national security - there are hundreds of other officials who do it in his absence.

If the President has no control over the military and isn't needed when the country is attacked, then why did America just spend 8 months debating who would be the better commander in chief?

The President has a lot of control over the military, as he is the only person that can order a civilian plane shot down, for example.
As well, the very minute that the secret service heard about the first attack, they rushed Cheney out of the White House and into the underground bunker. But yet they left the President sitting in a classroom?
Edit: Spelling like a 12 year old

I didn't say he has no control, I just said he doesn't micro-manage every military action. And, really, what would have changed if he left earlier???

Sitting there and looking presidentail was the right thing to do. Jumping up and running about every time some plane crashes is not confidence-instilling.
