Creationism taught in school?

http://www.cnn.com/2004/EDUCATION/11....ap/index.html

I find it ridiculous to teach creationism in any way outside of a religious class. But this is being taught as part of the science curriculum.

What in the hell is going on?

Quote:
The science curriculum "should not be totally inclusive of just one scientific theory," said Joni Burgin, superintendent of the district of 1,000 students in northwest Wisconsin.
It is the best scientific theory we have. There's much evidence to prove it. And they have kiwis to claim it as another scientific theory? I believe the closests it gets is scientific creationism which is basically saying "God is the Creator and evolution was created by God as a means of conservation." Someone correct me if I am wrong about that.

The reason I post this is to ask those who frequent here what you think about your children being taught something like creationism as SCIENCE in school? That's the key point for me. Creationism could be taught in a religion class if they want, because that's what it's about, but to make it a part of the science curriculum just smacks of ignorance and a horrible waste of time and resources. I for one, would protest such a move fervently.

Evolution or "big bang" isn't any more or less a legitimate theory than creationism, and teaching just one theory in school is what "smacks of ignorance and a horrible waste of time and resources". Now, I'm not personally religious, so don't think I'm a Christian preaching down on you, but the fact that you easily dismiss a theory over another like you did in your above post, as well as comments like "it's the best scientific theory we have" make you seem deeply uninformed and close-minded. I hope you're not a teacher.

You missed the point of what Evilregis was saying, he didn't say it couldn't be taught in school but that it shouldn't be taught as SCIENCE in school. There is no science behind creationism, its a faith based belief, as such it shouldn't be taught as science in schools.

He is hardly being 'deeply uninformed and close minded' if he expects schools to keep faith based beliefs out of science class.

To me, God and science are inseperable.

I dunno, must be the way I was taught.

You need a hell of a lotta faith to believe in the Big Bang as well... If you were to read up on that particular theory, you'll find that it's been pretty much ripped to shreads. Now I can concede that I misread the initial post with the capiltalized SCIENCE in it... but I do think teaching only one "theory" (barely a theory these days) in a SCIENCE class hardly carries any merit, either.

No it's not. I read that article several times, and nowhere did it say that they are teaching creationism as science in public schools.

You are kidding arent you? The first 4 paragraphs state it 3 different ways that its being taught in science class.

Quote:
School officials have revised the science curriculum to allow the teaching of creationism, prompting an outcry from more than 300 educators who urged that the decision be reversed
Quote:
Last month, when the board examined its science curriculum, language was added calling for "various models/theories" of origin to be incorporated

Quote:
Members of Grantsburg's school board believed that a state law governing the teaching of evolution was too restrictive. The science curriculum "should not be totally inclusive of just one scientific theory," said Joni Burgin, superintendent of the district of 1,000 students in northwest Wisconsin

I didn't see it either, I did see where they are allowing for it to be taught, though.

Rivux - read your own quotes. They aren't teaching it. Quote one sentence in the article where it says they are teaching creationism.

It's pretty disgusting. If people could debate these things like adults, it would be okay, but when they take news stories and intentionally misconstrue the facts, it's not doing the forum any good.

Let's remember the format for logical statements, and format our arguments accordingly. And read:

Ohio had something similar, but most of the teachers, or at least the ones I know, won't teach it.
