What has America come to?? Okay, no one answer that. Hell, you can't even smoke in the bars in Florida. Maybe it's just me, but when I drink, I have to smoke. Next thing you know they will be in your house locking your butt up for drinking. A little off topic here and not trying to be nasty but I saw the post about the porn shops and it reminded me of one of the Mayors in my state. He's trying to pass a bill to make oral sex illegal.

Oral sex already is illegal in at least one of the states for decades. Can't remember which one but you can look it up.
On that other issue, it's a sign. "The land of the Free" is only a slogan that has been put into the minds of the American people, looking at it from the outside America is one huge police controlled prison. I know people who had the FBI visiting them because of things they wrote in emails to friends. I know people who are put in jail because they choose herbal medicine for their illness. "Freedom of choice" is what freedom is about, shouting out loud that you are free and being able to say whatever you want is only a little part of real freedom.
I always find it funny how Americans who visit my country always have to mention 'how free' my country is, and how 'amazed' they are that our police people are so helpful and friendly, and how amazed they are that we don't have chaos while "the government allows so much".
What I have noticed is that Americans believe that governments are entitled to 'control' the people, a concept that is normally preserved for totalitarian dictatures. outside the US we can see how the US government has achieved to put that into the minds of "their" sheep, but outside the US you won't find many people who look at that as a democratically managed country, it looks more like the old DDR and USSR to most.

Nope. Not just you. They go together like chocolate and peanut butter.
And... speaking of chocolate and peanut butter...

it was illegal in Idaho when I was growing up - might not be now but at the time, I thought that was BIZARRE. And I don't think it's illegal to bonk your livestock in MT
See how free we are?!

Great post Ferre. I really think the US and to a lesser extent Europe (certainly the UK, at least!) need to get their own houses in order before invading other countries to enforce the wonders of democracy. We're often just as corrupt and seem to be losing our own freedoms on a daily basis.

How bizarre can it get? Now they are arresting 13 year old children on "terrorist" charges all because they email their major and the white house...

..All for the safety of the nation, of course.

They say he sent threatening emails, therefore he is a threat, regardless of his age, I agree with what they did, as if they need little snots thinking they can get away with anything, imagine what he'd grow up to be.

You believe that he is a threat? You believe that it was right to arrest him on terrorism charges? Jeeeesus.

I agree. The kid probably got fired up from reading some propaganda filled Amsterdam newlestter, but you never know what someone is capable of.

I agree, as well. Saying that Bush is a horrible president and operating on his own agenda is one thing; making threats of any kind is another. It's the difference between saying you hate someone and deciding that you hate them so much that you kill them.
But I still think the US is extremely uptight and over regulated on a lot of issues, which, in my mind, creates these uptight, angry, agressive children...and adults.

How can a 13 year old kid who sends a stupid little email be considered a genuine threat to anyone's security? What could he conceivably do? It's not about a threat becoming serious at a given age, it's about a threat being the slightest bit plausible in the first place! I'm absolutely amazed that the overwhelming reaction isn't "holy crap what an abuse of power arresting a harmless little kid" frankly. And terrorism charges?!
I won't post any more on this subject, I might get carried away.

I have children of that age, and me thinks that even if he treatened there are many other solutions than arresting a child. We are talking about children here, and when even children get fed up with politics that is more of a red flag than anything else.
Arresting children on "terrorist" charges? All for the safety of our children of course.
