I quick browse through realtor.com shows that houses are available for as low as $10000. Is it true, or am I just seeing some marketing gimmick in action?

Correct. US housing is extremely affordable if you stay out of larger metro areas.
I feel for homeless. I've read that a very large percentage of them suffer from mental disabilities, but we have many government subsidy programs in place to offset housing costs for the genuinely disabled (programs which are more often raped by the lazy than used by the truly disabled).
Homelessness in America is by and large a choice.
