2008 = $725 billion in military spending
Bush proposes $725,000,000,000 for the military in 2008 while cutting nearly $80 billion from health and education programmes.(1)
It would seem that the priorities are clear. Military - Important. Health of every Man, Woman and Child in the US less so. It seems like a very warped way of "protecting" citizens whichever way you look at it.
The American Heart Association estimates that 61,800,000 Americans have cardiovascular disease and nearly 1,000,000 die becasue of it each year (2002)(2). This year 1.368 million Americans will learn they have cancer and 563,700 will die of it (3). Where do you suppose the money could be better spent?
How many lives will the continuing wars in Iraq and elsewhere save?

I do not understand why the government (i.e. working folks) are paying for health care. Most of us pay for our own health insurance. As far as I'm concerned, they should eliminate government funded health care.

Why can't they afford it? Maybe they should get off their asses and work? Or maybe they have family that should help out? Or perhaps there are huge charities that help out?
If people are donating money to Planned Parenthood to fund the slaughter of innocent unborn humans, I tend to think that people would be even more inclined to fund legitimate (i.e. non baby killing) health care for those that truly need it.

uh, I'm going to go with "Duh".
I want my government to protect me from violence. If I get a heart attack because I'm a fat ass who eats to much fast food and smokes like a chimney stack that's my own damn fault.
sorry to seem insensitive but it's not the governments responsibility to take on socialist rolls.

Maybe they have a disability that prevents them from working. At the end of the day your or anybody else's health isn't more important than anyone else's (In the grand scheme of things, that is). So everyone should have access to similar levels of heath care.
Why should Mr X, who inherited a successful company from his father receive first class care while Mr Y, who lost an arm and his eyesight in a car accident borrow from his sister who herself is struggling to make ends meet working as a high school teacher?
Its hypothetical of course but nothing wrong with putting yourself in someone else's shoes once in a while.

I'd be less than 20% of the people who live on the government can actually justify it from disabilities and whatnot.

hey she knew going into the job that it pays peanuts.
I don't disagree that life can suck for people at times, and if that's where you feel called to help, then go for it. the world needs extremists on both sides to create a balance. But the majority of our health insurance woes come from two sources:
- Greedy individuals and lawyers who will sue a dr. for not kissing ass
- Lazy slobs who won't take care of their own health.

May as well kick her to the curb when she really needs help - that'll teach her stupid ass a lesson.

Doesn't mean that you should punish everyone though.

I don't. I mean you can't seriously be blaming everyone for their own illnesses.

Um, fact of life? Why should he not ride around in a Ferrari when Mr. X gets to ride aournd in a Ferrari? Why shouldn't he live in a huge mansion, when Mr. X gets to live in a huge mansion?
Screw this, let's just paay everybody the same wage and elect Marx President.

the military protects everyone from something we can't fully prepare for. terrorism.
health we can prepare for, personal finance we can prepare for. bad things happen along the way, but we can still prepare and do our best to take care of ourselves. but if we're invaded you can't pull the tank out of your garage and head to the beach.

I agree on those two points dude, though it isn't as black and white as that though.
It is difficult for us in the UK to fully understand this as we have the NHS - National Health Service that looks after it's people and this seems to work pretty well for us.

lol. Mr. X can keep his Ferrari, I wouldn't doubt that for a minute, or his business, or his millions of dollars. I simply doubt that he has a "right" to a better standard of health care.

One of my biggest concerns for our nation is health insurance.
We have an AWESOME economy right now. I can't imagine it being any stronger. Unemployment is ZERO. Growth is huge. the stock market is record breaking. New construction (not just homes, commerical here) is NON STOP. and yet still health insurance is TOOO expensive.
that concerns me because what happens if the economy tanks?
I think health is a major... MAJOR concern.
but I think military is justifiably more important. and heart disease is often self inflicted. I agree about the need for health reform, but I think it starts at the individual.
same with the teachers btw. They dig their own graves via worthless unions.
