Violence
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070420/...asa_evacuation
Living in Japan, where violence is extremely rare, it really does look like the US is a nation of mentally unstable.
Of course, I lived there and this is not true, but it looks that way from overseas. And America does have issues.

Japan is so different. They teach personal responsibility here, and it's embedded in the culture. Seems like the US goes the opposite direction - in the US they seem to teach that everybody is a victim of society, and deserves pay-back.

Everyone should be Canadian.
I just thought I'd add that.

That maybe so...but why do all these studies talk about the prevalence of other kinds of violence in Japan... such as domestic violence? Is it really that common there? Such as, these articles talk about violence of men towards their girlfriend or wife as being common, and there being no laws to penalize those who batter women?

Well I searched for "violence in Japan" on Google, and it kept giving me results to all kinds of things about how domestic violence is a problem there.
I'm not looking to argue... just curious.

America def. has a problem with violence and IMO it's because we idealize it in our society through a variety of ways. We've been through this a thousand times - now something just has to be done.
BTW - most Americans are NOT violent.

At the high school in my town today, it was shut down due to a bomb threat. Another one about 30 miles away was also shut down due to someone threatening a Columbine type incident. Whackos.

In my opinion, gun law doesn't help.

It seems like "some" people in the USA have lost all sense of responsibility, respect for others, respect for parents and authority and everything is settled with violence.
I remember when I was a kid, if you did something wrong, no matter how minor, first one neighbor yelled at you, then another neighbor would scold you, then when your parents got home from work, the neighbor would tell them what happened, then you parents would yell at you and punish you.
Now you can't spank your children, don't yell at them or risk the wrath of everyone around you at the mall or whatever giving you dirty looks. If you spank you're abusive, I would rather spank my child on the butt when they're heading for the road, than have them get hit by a car, because all I ever did was put them in timeout !
I remember when I was 5 my dad spanked me, it was the only time in my life I remember him hitting me, I never did what I did again. And after that for the rest of his days, all he had to do was give me a look !! Now we have children that hit their parents, swearing at them, and shooting them.
It all starts at home, but its tough to be tough at home, when so many people are into the be nice, tolerant, timeouts and praise, you know what sometimes alittle discipline doesn't hurt, I hated getting grounded when I was a kid, watching my friends playing outside when I was stuck in my room for a week !! That stunk !! My parents didn't beat me, but I got my share of spankings. I didn't fear my parents but I respected that, and I think some of that respect is missing in society now a days. Oh just my opinion by the way.

With influx or immigrants. Parental guidance won't help much.

I have a feeling that not all the crime in this country is caused by immigrants.

It's scary when you think about it, people that do these things, exist all over the world, and to think one will walk into a store you're in, or a class you're taking, of somewhere you're working at, for one reason, to kill and get killed, just really scares me

Your ancestors are probably a few scum who emigrated to USA and killed off the natives then bred with each other spawning a massive civilisation which now includes you. Immigrants are in your blood.
