Political Correctness
People often say stuff is "gay". I use it in reference to unfashionable stuff, like ugly cars, etc, and it has nothing to do with homosexuality. So I'm wondering, isn't it time that the gay rights people found a new name?

ROFL and JUST for that john, you get a close up of my toes
*goes to take pic*
OnTopic/ i use it for the same reasons too, like, oh, in my siggy and in general too.
And i don't know what the gay rights people should use tbh, why not stick with 'homos/homosexuals' i say.

To my understanding, the word gay means happy or merry.
A friend of mine mentioned that gay meant, Good As You and that is how it came to be as the the term gay. Could be nonsense but he bats for the opposition

I was under the same impression that G10 was...Gay is only happy.....How it became a derogative terminology is beyond me....I guess it's like saying that something is phat is a good thing...Something sick is a good thing....Something "bad" is good....Something "far out" is....well that's just really old....

I don't know if he's right or not, but my husband's theory is that it relates to the stereotype of how gays behave. Just watch The Wizard of Oz and see how a lot of the actors behave rather like a gay (homosexual) person would be stereotyped to behave. At that time, he says, gay was used to describe being happy and showing it in that rather flamboyant way.

stephfoster has it ! Lets call them flamboyant, until the flamboyant people get pissed off, that should take the heat off for alittle while.
How about the other term, Queer ?? I have used queer to mean odd or strange in describing things other than people. Go figure.

How ironic that gay people tend to be the most fashionable of all!
Hey - what is the current "PC" term for homosexual, anyway?
And how now should we describe a Happy Hetero?

I still don't like the use of "gay" as in insult. YES, I know it's not referring to sexual orientation at all. But I still disapprove.

One of the more
interesting threads I can recall coming across around these parts.
Maybe "same-sexual" would make more sense. But, I agree that we need to take back the word gay. I miss it.
And another thing we need to take back is the rainbow. The rainbow used to be Hawaii's state image and it was on all the license plates and you saw it everywhere over there. It made people gay (as in happy).
Now in an ironic twist of fate when people visiting Hawaii and they happen across a rainbow it just makes them think of gays.
Go figure. What's next the smiley face!?

I miss the word Gay too. I used to think it was such a pretty word just to decribe Happy.
Then it was stolen away by homosexuals because they were not gay enough to be called homosexuals (too long a word?) so they ripped off the word Gay!
I can only imagine my grandchildren read some "far out" poetry and wonder why people's sexuality is refered to in the poems!
Political correctness is taken a step too far!

I second that will all seriousness, often times society is telling us that we have to be mindful of other people.
So like Ferre said Political correctness is indeed gay!

Heterosexuals have totally ruined the word "straight." It used to mean "I'm on the straight and narrow" or "I'm straight" meaning I'm not drunk or I'm clean or some such thing. But now if I say "I'm straight" everyone assumes I'm a heterosexual!!! But I just want to tell them that I'm drug and disease free! Why does sex always have to enter into it!?!? What's a straight straight man to do?!?! Why can't straights just call themselves "heterosexuals" or "Different-sexual"?!?!?
