I guess in a gun ridden culture you have to prepare them for the possibility, however remote, but it seems a little extreme and baring in mind recent events a little thoughtless.

I don't know about America but in the UK I think we are getting over protective towards children.

I bloody hope not but things like this can mentally traumatize them enough for it to come back and haunt them and carry it out for real when they get older.

I hope they put some effort into at least explaining to them what they did and why.

This, kind of, reminds me of that Simpsons episode where Flander's wife kept saying, "won't somebody think of the children!".

Let's hope they grow up and laugh it off. The same event can inspire or frighten a child, it depends on those around him/her and how they respond.

I think gun attacks on groups of children are few and far enough between that you don't need to prepare every group of school kids for the possiblity. What a stupid idea.

I kind of see both sides to this.

Yes it doesn't happen very often, but then it only has to happen once and your child is involved and suddenly your life is full of crap. And no matter how old your off spring are, they are still YOUR kids in the end.

A few years back in London, some crazed pycho jumped into a childrens nursery play ground and started hacking away at the little ones with a machete. One of the teachers put herself in the way to protect them.

I can only imagine what those children and their parents went though. Since then security procedures have been tightened considerably in all nurseries.

It only takes one lunatic.

These thoughts are often in my mind at the moment. London is a dangerous place for the young. One kid going to school has been mugged 60 times over the last two years in our area by bullies. The poor kid is terrified.

You don't want to over protect them but then again ...

They did stupid gun/intruder drills at my high school after the Columbine incident. I thought it was lame. They didn't tell us it was a drill either, but they also didn't tell us what was going on...they just told us to hide under our desks and lock the doors. Bastards. Afterwards they told us it was a drill in case anything like Columbine ever happened at our school.

These things really aren't necessary, IMO. There's very little you can do to prepare for such incidents, and they aren't all that common.

Perhaps not the right to go about it but we certainly do need to prepare not only our children but also the general public on how to handle various events like this. It just seems weird to me but how did that psycho at Virginia Tech get as far as he did. I mean he killed 30 people. Did he have to reload? I would have beat the crap out of him while he was reloading.

Most people would act on instinct and run as far as they can and hope not to get hit.

I think if he had the opportunity he would have killed far more than 30.
