John, according to your smart way of thinking, every single milkman, butcher, webhost owner, grocery store owner, bar owner, in fact every single business owner's friends are the scum of the earth.
Oh, and don't forget doctors, police officers, nurses and all others who have contact with other people due to their job.

I never implied that.

Who said they were scum of the earth? The original poster said he was only seeing negative, so I suggested he associate with other people. I never said he was scum. You got a problem with English, or are you being intentionally obtuse?

True, you never said HE was scum, you implied that his friends are scum...

This was based on the satement that he has "Seen" people being not-so-nice.
You based your implication on your opinion that he at least "assosiated" with those people, and as we know, doctors, nurses and all business owners associate with people too and therefor I can make the correct conclusion that according to your line of thinking, all those groups of people can be implied to have friends that are the scum of the earth too.
Not my reasoning John, yours. I only analize your own statements. I don't even judge them.

Yes, Ferre, if you associate with scum of the earth then you associate with scum of the earth, and no, I didn't imply that the association in any way makes the person scum. Do doctors associate with scum of the earth? Sure. Does that make the doctor scum? Nope.
And yes, I stand by what I said. If you're getting a negative view of humanity, then maybe you should change who you hang with.
Simple enough concept for you?

Not as much opportunity as the external world often thinks.

Or not as much Americans tell others?
Sometimes I feel I am told America is the best country in the world, simply because the person in question wants to believe this.

I lived in USA for 2 years. What one hears about America and what one actually sees in America are altogether different stories. Crime rate is alarmingly high in many states/cities. Thefts/Robberies are very common. Child kidnappings are a day-to-day story. Some cities see close to 500 murders every year.

When I say the above, I must also admit that USA is by far the best destination for immigrants. When I was in USA, I never felt alienated but felt part of the country. I did not feel so during my stays at Europe.
My Vote will always go to USA as the best destination for immigrants.

And where do you come from?

viswablr - The crime rate here is definitely a problem. In my opinion it's the main negative with the U.S.. I'm not sure we can get it under control until we decide to truly crack down on violent criminals. Today we treat violent criminals more leniant then drug dealers or white collar criminals in many cases. Seems a large segment of our population feels sympathy for these criminals (coincidentally the same people that sympathize with the Jihadists).
No crime is acceptable, but violent crime should bring much more harsh prison sentences than they currently do and if the common excuse of "overcrowding" is causing the early release of prisoners then the violent criminals should be the last in line to get freed and new prisons should be built.
Violent crime in the U.S. is the only thing about America I'm consistently embarassed about. As for how you felt "welcome" here I'm glad to hear it. I like to believe 98% of us Americans are very friendly and big hearted.
Are we the "best" country? That's totally subjective and I would hope most people love their own country and consider it the best. I've been a lot of places and all of them seem to have their pro's and con's.

I have stayed at France (Paris, Nice), Holland (Amsterdam), Belgium (Antwerp) and Germany (Frankfurt). I am from East Asia.
Europe countries are nice, but unlike USA, visitors/immigrants from other continents don't feel welcome.

If you didn't feel welcome in Amsterdam there must be something wrong with you.
60% of Amsterdam's population is not Dutch and the main language is english because of this. Many shops don't even have Dutch employees and Dutch people are forced to speak english when they live in Amsterdam if they want to be understood.
