Now I'm remembering why I don't usually post in this forum - never ending stream of questions leading to differring opinons.
I'm no expert and it's midnight. I retract any statements requireing in favour of some shut eye.

from my view point America is a pretty scary place. I like it better in NYC where I live.

From my point of view, America is a Theatre 'd Absurd. And mainly because of their policies, both international and internal.

Yeah, but it used to be Dutch when it was still called New Amsterdam, there must be some positive influence left.

Technically, sure. But NYC is as different from "the heartland of America" as France is. Thank the Spaghetti Monster for that!
And I think most New Yorkers are as disgusted by George W Bush and the ignorance of the average American as Europeans are. I certainly am.
We lag greatly behind the rest of the world in so many areas and I blame that entirely on the vast wasteland between NY & LA

Of course I'm not being entirely serious. There are a couple of other cool places in America.. Austin... San Francisco. And um... ?

Great subject Mr. Keith Cash.
I think America is the richest country on the PLANET. Land of the free and home of the brave!
Many may not know, but some of the wisest people come here. I mean (great souls) guys like Gandhi.

Heh... NY and LA determine the direction of America far more than any city in Iowa, Idaho, Nebraska, etc. Those two major cities are the voice of America, not the rustbelt and the plains. The problem is that the "wasteland" exists even within NYC and LA. And if those 2 cities didn't support it in some way then it wouldn't be occurring. We're all in this together.

ewomack i'm referring to the direction of politics in this country and why we are still so far behind europe as far as progressive policies (universal health care for an obvious example.)
and it's the "vast wasteland" (and yes i say that somewhat, but not entirely, tongue in cheek) that is responsible for our current president being in office.

Why not just call them socialist? It just seems like you're trying to hide your agenda when you refer to "progressive policies".

it's a battle of semantics of course. conservatives have rather successfuly demonized words like "liberal" and "socialism" ... "progressive" may be a bit harder to demonize. plus I think it's the most apt word for what i believe in.
there are always people who think that things should stay the way they are (conservatives) merely because that's the way they've always been. they are the people are always wrong, about everything. progressive is the opposite of that. it's looking for ways to move society, human rights, & civil liberties forward. equal opportunity for everyone. at least that's how i see it.
i guess conservatives see it as "maybe i can't take advantage of poor people as easily when there aren't so many poor people" ? I don't know. different perspectives I guess.
