She had some many mouths to shut up and now they all go silent as Pratibha Patil becomes the first women President of India.

Its a shame she got elected. Maybe she shut up a few but wont open her mouth to talk anything other than what her mentors tutor..Somebody who will be just a rubber stamp of the present government.

I am not exactly for other candidate too. Imagine a 72 year old and a 84 year old politician battling to become president. Is the cupboard so bare that India cant get anyone better? Both the candidates are mired in icky corruption cases.

The only use of the post of president in India is to threaten state governments (especially ruled by a party different from the centre) and sack if needed. So it does not matter whether a man, woman, child or a 90+ aged person sits there. Only requirement, He/She should know to sign and to use a rubber stamp.

i seem to understand that india is one of those countries where the president is little more then a figurehead, a simbol, while most real political power is held by the prime minister. am i right?

Yes, in India president is a dummy post. All the powers rest with the prime minister.

Any parliamentary bill will become a law only when the president signs it, but the president has no other option other than to sign every bill passed to him/her. (Technically, he/she can send back the bill to parliament for reconsideration, but only once for each bill. If the parliament sends the bill back to the president again, president *must* sign it).

India is virtually ruled by an Italian (Sonia Gandhi). Even though she is not the prime minister, she is the head of the congress party, and the prime minister Manmohan Singh will not do any thing against her wishes.
