Police Corruption and Abuse

How to deal with it?

I have a idea. I think that if no cop was alone, it would cut back on abuse and corruption. A "two cop" rule would mean that every cop would be watched by another cop, and vice versa, at all times.

Of course, if you got two like-minded dirty cops together, it wouldn't help, so mandatory rotation. If Cop Bill is teamed up with Cop Bob today, tomorrow Cop Bill is with Cop John, and Cop Bob is with Cop Larry.

Good idea?

If you were a cop and you knew your partner (or someone else in your unit) was corrupt, would you blow the whistle? That's the problem I think. Mainly you'd probably just keep your head down. I suppose rotating partners might help, but it might also put the corrupt cop into more contact with others. I wouldn't know but I imagine the process of corruption sometimes starts with a cop being slipped a C note by another cop to glance away for a minute.

There might be a flip side to rotating Cops.

If Cop Bob was corrupt, and was put on duty with straight-shooting Cop Larry (thanks for using my name in this, BTW...lol) is it not possible that Cop Larry might see how easy it is to make a few extra dollars, or take his frustrations out on some unsuspecting Jay Walker?

Then, Cop Larry is then put on Duty with Cop John. Same thing happens. And down the line we go...

Is is not possible that rotating cops might actually spread corruption?

How to deal with it?

Get a video camera would be the simplest solution. If you can have it send live footage to a computer at home where it was being recorded... Even better, so even if they threaten to take the tapes you can confidently say "Well, there is no tape, it is being recorded remotely."

Voice recorders help but make proving anything much harder.

Before logging inn to v7n.Today i was thinking to start a thread about police corruption, but got happy to see that you have already done one related to it.
Inorder to overcome this issue i will say that if there is a complete check and balance over someone then he can never be inolved in fraud acts.
A cop should be trained in such a way that he never thinks of fraud. It should be disclosed upon him that he is under supervision eerytime. And if possible sometimes a report about his duty timings or personal life should be kept in front of him so that he can get that he is under supervision. The report should be just to make him wiser if he keeps in mind that his activites are being watched out then i hope that he will never move in the wrong direction.

Just my poin of view.

When they step over the line, cops should face mandatory minimum sentences for abuse, corruption, etc.. There should be laws that states that law enforcement officers will receive huge minimum punishments for breaking the law and the trust that they are given by the people to protect the people´s rights and safety.

How about compensating more and raising the standards for becoming an officer of the law. In parts of the country they are cutting a police officers salary in half, to higher twice as many, with half the previous requirements. Duh, your not going to get the pick of the litter that way.

In my local city we recently started cutting requirements and basically giving away badges to Blacks and Mexicans that wanted to carry a gun. Thank you equal opportunity...pfft.

There is good and bad in people from all walks of life.

In the past there has been widespread police corruption in forces all over the world and money sometimes does strange things to people of previously good character.

That's a good idea... Anyway, police corruption is everywhere and I can't think of any idea how it would stop. I mean, it repeats from generation to generation right? So if tomorrow they change, there will be another tomorrow for bad cops...
