I hate Hitler
But not for the obvious reason that he was a mass murderer.
I hate him for being long winded. Reading his Mein Kampf is absolutely painful. The guy cannot just state an opinion and let it be. Pompous windbag.
Interesting controversy on Hitler, though. Some people define him as rightwing (for his nationalism) and others define him as leftwing (for his socialism).
Personally, I think the terms have lost a lot of meaning.
Oh, and he mentions in his book a prior controversy about trains.
Quote:

As regards the objections of so-called practical men, they can be answered as follows: All fears regarding the terrible economic consequences of the ' breaking of interest slavery ' are superfluous; for, in the first place, the previous economic prescriptions have turned out very badly for the German people, and your positions on the problems of national self-maintenance remind us strongly of the reports of similar experts in former times, for example, those of the Bavarian medical board on the question of introducing the railroad. It is well known that none of the fears of this exalted corporation were later realized: the travelers in the trains of the new 'steam horse ' did not get dizzy, the onlookers did not get sick, and the board fences to hide the new invention from sight were given up-only the board fences around the brains of all so-called 'experts' were preserved for posterity.

Seems even trains were controversial at one time.

Mein Kampf is crap. It is a compilation of various ramblings slapped together. I was reading that Mein Kampf was written while hitler was in prison for trying to overthrow the government. He himself did not write it, he dictated it to Rudolph Hess, supposedly. The book was fueled by emotion and lacks structure. If you go to a schizophrenic and record his thoughts for a week, put them on paper and call it a book, it might closely resemble Hitler's work.
The left and right ideals have lost their meaning. I think it is hard for any American to claim to be at the extremes of either side. We live in a socialist democracy fueled by capitalism. It's a blend of everything, really. I think the Hitler controversy was intentional so he could capture the support of the majority of the German people. This is not any different from American politicians saying what they need to in order to get elected. If you are an outstanding public speaker, no matter what you actually believe, you could manipulate the audience.

That is the most accurate statement I've heard all day. I can't speak for the world at large, but my observation of the American system shows that style wins over substance almost every time. Don't get me wrong.. a leader needs to be able to express his ideas and emotions well. That's what inspires people.
I'm just sitting in slack jawed amazement at what America will vote for if the proper stage presence is there even if the candidate has no credentials worthy of such a level of trust.
We Republicans have had a pretty pitiful pool to choose from since the beginning of this, and now have the second worst available choice (second only to Rudy) as the front runner. The Dems picked the two biggest turkeys running and have them rallied them to a passionate dead heat nationally.
McCain & Hillary are the best known (most famous, not necessarily worthy) and Obama is a great speaker with about as much practical substance as a cornflake.
God help us. We need a hero desperately.

As am I, and this is exactly why I have thus far chosen to not participate in any political election in this country, and I am a 54 year old native born American. It has never made sense to me for me to do so since I was 18 y/o. I almost registered to vote when I was 18, but didn't through, strangely enough, a fluke. The lady at the registration place gave me a dirty look because I had long hair, so I turned around and left without registering or voting. I haven't registered to this day, but for reasons that eventually evolved into ones expressed in the above quote and similarly related.

I think that JFK's assassination had a profound effect on me as a child. We got to go home from school and everything.

All things serve a purpose. Hitler gave meaning to some people's lives. His book may be crap, but it has made its way into this discussion. I read it, but only because I needed to for research, WAY back in HS.

Well if you had to prove that, I suspect you'd discover that there cannot be an opposite to something if that something does not exist. The in, in the word insane, means "not".

Oh come on John, he was just a little misunderstood is all...
Amazing what a bit of bad publicity can do for a man....
And for those of you that don't know my humour, I was joking ;-)

Corporal Hitler
Adolf Hitler served in the trenches of the first world war start to finish
But he never rose above the rank of corporal
His officers felt that he lacked leadership ability

Maybe he was just having a dad day?
And yes, he is supposed to have had those tendencies.
Though the Aryan race idea would have been interesting, especially as most people, including his top generals had black hair and hated the idea of what he was doing.
