who draws that line John? An open hand is ok but a closed one isn't?
Who decides what should warrant being slapped?

You tell me, the video is linked in the first post! I took it as a hard slap to shut her up and make her stop talking about whatever was annoying him.

Well, let's see. I was slapped. I didn't draw a line. I was strangled with a cord. I didn't draw a line. I was punched. I didn't draw a line. I was stabbed in the chest, and I drew a line.
So it looks like the parties to the relationship draw the line, and not some arbitrary strangers who want to force their values on others.

Man, sorry to hear you went through that. I had a rough relationships long ago when I was younger but nothing like that!
About your point on parties to the relationship deciding. Reminds me of how morals are dictated by the social structure you come from, which is why what is moral in one time and place is not in another ... and which is why primates have morals in effect, it being a negative to steal for example. Apes will go out and seek to exact justice on thieves!

How thick is the cord? And only is the victim is American.
No, I'm saying that people should be allowed their own relationships and government interference should be kept at a minimum.
In Japan, there was an American guy, typical holier than thou American, who witnessed a Japanese guy slap his wife. American guy went over and imposed himself on the couple, round-housed the Japanese guy and killed him on the spot. Wife was upset.
If the wife believed her husband to be abusive, she could very well leave him. Or call the cops. Or whatever. Just because Americans believe their culture to be the most advanced and Americans believe that slapping is should be a felony doesn't mean I buy it.

All in all, she was an extremely good woman, a fine woman. And I probably deserved worse than I got.

Who is talking about the government? I said he's irresponsible for spewing his asinine views on national television.
You can't go up to a stranger and slap them without getting arrested, so why should your spouse be any different.

I'm starting to notice a slight anti-American tone to this site, Mister!

The answer is consent.
If two people consent to communicate in that fashion, I'm not going to arrogate myself to impose my values upon them by democratic proxy and enforced by men with guns.
Draw blood, and yeah, I might arrogate myself. But as it is, it's just stupid. A guy was arrested for "domestic violence" for throwing a coffee cup. Seriously. He didn't throw it at his wife. You can get arrested for domestic violence for putting your hand threw a wall.
Women, on the other hand, can get away with murder.

Surely you aren't suggesting sexism in the American judicial system, John.
It's not as easy as you think to have your husband arrested for abuse. If he gets taken away, you know he's coming back and the police won't be there.
What Sean Connery does in his home with his wife is indeed his business. However, he's so flippant about using violence against his wife when she "talks back" that he feels he can basically brag about it on national television and it's appalling.

There is in some sense, I believe. Generally speaking, the odds of a woman being put in a police car and taken downtown, detained, or arrested for yelling and punching a wall are much lower than if a man was doing that.

I would no more suggest that than I would suggest that water is wet.

I don't know that. I know a lot of people get arrested for DV when they shouldn't have been. I know also that attorneys will tell you it's just "standard operating procedure" to get the husband arrested before a divorce in order to increase the chances of full custody of the children and the house and higher maintenance payments.

I'm sure she got millions of dollars in the divorce because of that abuse.
