I find it frightening that any democratic government have such laws. And to prosecute someone because of what they wrote in a book, or worst yet wrote in a private letter to someone even if that person was a person in government. The person to be prosecuted should be the person that leaked the letter to the press not the one that wrote it. It's not like she took out an ad in the newspaper. As for the books, if you find her writings offensive then don't read them. Takes me back to the 80's when all us teens were taught that we could hear stuff if we played our records backwards....we would have never thought of doing it had the religious nuts of the period told us about it LoL.....I thought countries over there had a freer society than that. Guess that shows what I know....

Now that I'm thinking.........you can flash boobs and penis's on the telivision....you can have mistresses and affairs etc etc etc but you can't say that I don't believe in what a muslim does.... how many people get convicted because they say they don't believe in what a christian does? Or I don't think we should let any more Americans have citizenship(like that's likely to be a huge concern) Anyone see problems with any of these things?

I believe everyone is entitled to an opinion. Not everyone will agree with it, but thats their opinion.
She is just saying what she believes. I think they are being a bit harsh.

How can you protest to be a free and modern nation without it? How can you hope for any kind of sociological, scientific, or even economic growth without it?

That is a sad state of affairs but it has been for a while that free speech is a non-existent thing and govenmnets just blind society into believing they have this, especially in the UK as if one speaks out against a Muslim etc, then one faces court or is classed as a racist..

You're absolutely right. Opinions now appear to fall somewhere within the constraints of Limited Speech and Complete Silence.
PS: I speak out against Muslims all the time. *whistles a tune*

Hmmm...personally I haven't really I guess I won't say never because I don't remember everything I've ever said and I haven't always been as wise as my age though not old has made me versus youth, but I do know even in my youth I was never directly opposed to a person because of race or religion. I do remember as a kid having a no girls allowed club thing a time or 2 but that was at the age of like 6 or 7 I think....
Any how getting to the point, free speech, unfortunately someone somewhere decided that if you are saying something that someone else finds offensive then you are over stepping your rights. If I remember right Congress even tried making this a law back in the 90's with Internet web pages. If it offended someone then it would be illegal. Luckily that law was defeated. But it was definitely scary.
Free speech in my eyes is and should always be just that, the freedom to speech. The unfortunate part of that is that there are those out there that are neither mature or educated enough to have the responsibility of it. This causes stupid little laws and such to get made chipping away at that right and before you know it you end up where a lot of us are.

Well... I have lived almost half of my life in communist dictatorship and I know what I'm talking about but I can tell that some things about political correctness and all that stuff that is going on now in USA and some EU countries remind me on that what we had here some 20 years ago.
Maybe it sounds little bit too much to you guys but unfortunately it isn't.

Because I respect other people's beliefs.
From what I've seen, no group is immune to criticism. Ever go to high school in the US?

Don't take me wrong, same as you I respect other people beliefs too and I do not have anything against anybody and I'm not Muslim. I just think that one who owns media controls freedom of speech and as long as you speak against Muslims (in usa) all the time it is ok with them and you will have all the freedom you need to do the same. Once you start to talk something they don't like you will see that freedom of speech is not same as it was before.
Now think about who owns majority of mainstream media in the USA.
