Punishment for drunk driving?

I think it should be harsh. If they get caught, they've most likely done it before.

Drunk driving kills. I say permanent loss of license, confiscate the car, and a heavy fine on top of that.

Thankfully, I never owned a vehicle during my 10+ year binge. If I had, I'm sure DUI would have been on my list of "Stupid Things I Did While Drinking!" (...and that list is more than long enough already! EG: Beer Muscles - "Let's take a swing at the biggest guy in the bar!")

Penalties for DUI in Canada are fairly harsh, but unfortunately, they usually get more than one chance to make the offense.

"He didn't kill anyone this time, but let's give him another chance a year down the road." is basically how it works.

Sad...

take drivers license away for a 10 years, confiscate the car + heavy fine

the keyword should be: inevitability not the size of the punishment

why 10 years and not forever? people grow up, there must be a room for a goodwill and change.

If they lose their license they are still going to drive. If the car does not belong to then how can it be confiscated? The best sentence would be a certin number of days hard labor and then weekend jail confinement for 2 years or more.

Basing on our own transpo laws, it depends on how grave the effect made. You could be penalized as grave as reclusion perpetua if somebody died because of your recklessness. OR they could just suspend your license for a period of time and just pay for the damages.

But I would agree to John's proposition that drunk driving should have a heavy penal punishment. People should be responsible enough when to drive their own car and when to just left it and commute.

Forcing ones' self on driving under influence would just cause greater damage than thinking that your car will get lost, etc.

Wow John, I purposefully stayed out of this thread because I figured you would be a little more liberal on this topic(why I have no idea?). I agree with you to an extent, but first I think we need to go back to our current limits of what constitutes drunk driving. I'm sorry, but Indiana's .08 does not make me drunk, at all. But god forbid I have a tail light out and blow .08, I'm going to jail, even though I may pass every other intoxication test.

I, in fact, obtained a DUI a couple years ago.. I have never and will never do it again since that incident. I do agree (thankfully they aren't...) that DUI laws should be much more strict, in my state where I live now, Mississippi, they are quite harsh actually o_O

Drunk driving or any sort of intoxicated driving.. of any sort.. is not a responsible, safe idea.

LOL! Maybe they should include that.

Well I agree with John. Drunk driving kills and is against the law. The punishment should really be something that they would definitely regret the day they drive drunk...

I had the bright idea a few years ago that everyone should be forced to get a permit affixed to their drivers license to buy alcohol. No charge, and no one refused. And if caught drunk driving - you lose your alcohol buying permit. Anyone who supplies you with alcohol loses their permit.

I agree with you, I would not be taking a cab for the rest of my life if I got my license take away, I would just drive without a license and hopefully not get caught. I was also in alot of situations where the drivers are not drunk but they had some drinks, more in the tipsy phase, and they drive pretty reckless so I would want harsher laws put on them because I know some of them already had a few DUI but they are still on the road.
